We are confident ahead of 2011 WC, says Netherlands captain

Updated at: 1814 PST,  Friday, February 04, 2011
Netherlands caused one of the biggest shocks in cricket's history defeating England in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, and more recently, beat Bangladesh in an ODI in July 2010. Dutch captain Peter Borren is confident his team can also cause some upsets in the World Cup despite being in a difficult group. Borren also says there is a positive environment in the squad where everyone will try to get results and express themselves. Borren picks out Alexei Kervezee as the player to watch in the Netherlands squad. Excerpts from an interview with Inside Cricket:
This is the Netherlands' fourth appearance in the ICC World Cup. What are the expectations for the Dutch team from the 2011 World Cup?

We are going with some preparation. We have a talented team and we can cause some upsets during the tournament. As cliche goes we will take it game by game. Obviously at this stage our main target is to reach the second round. If we get to the quarter-finals it will be fantastic.

Netherlands caused one of the biggest shocks in cricket's history defeating England in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, and more recently, beat Bangladesh in an ODI in July 2010. Have these results infused confidence among the players that they can compete with the stronger teams?

Absolutely. There is no doubt that we don't get opportunities against top teams always. Whenever we get a couple of opportunities, we need to make most of it. The real plus now is the confidence in the team. We have caused a few upsets, there is no doubt we can do it again. At the end of the day it will be a challenge because we don't play opposition of this quality that often. But we have got the confidence that we have a capable batting line-up which can take on the quality attacks from around the world.

The squad includes six players who will be playing in their first World Cup and an uncapped player in Berend Westdijk. Will this inexperience be a disadvantage for Netherlands in the 2011 CWC?

I don't think six players is an awful lot. Lots of teams have players who will be playing in a World Cup for the first time. We also have nine guys who have played in a World Cup. We have a reasonable mix of youth and experience. It is not a serious problem.

Tom Cooper and Ryan Ten Doeschate have already established themselves as players of repute in their respective domestic stints in Australia and England respectively. How important is it for Netherlands that these two are in form heading into and during the World Cup?

There is no doubt that they are big players for us. We are hoping that they will contribute a lot. They have been playing domestic cricket in Australia, which is at a very good level. I hope they will fit in right away and will come after scoring some good runs. We also have plenty of other guys who can step up. We have had a very decent preparation. The team is here in Dubai three weeks in advance. Then we have atleast four warm up games plus nets before the tournament. The key is that this is a 11-man game, we are not relying on two or three guys. Ryan ten Doeschate and Tom Cooper are very good players. But we have got plenty of good players in the side.

Who are the other key players in Netherlands' squad who can be expected to make an impact on the 2011 World Cup?

Everyone will hear a lot about Alexei Kervezee. He plays for Worcestershire in English county cricket. This will be his second World Cup. He played the last at the age of 16. He has developed into a very classy player. I have no doubt one day he will become a world class player. He is the player to watch out.

Are you happy with the balance of the squad?

Absolutely happy. We have got experienced player and a few youngsters. At the end of the day, we have to do what we can. The side is keen to do a good job. We have 15 guys who work together. There is a positive environment in the squad where everyone will try to get results, express ourselves and hopefully create some upsets.

How well has the squad been able to train for the World Cup considering that several of the players are not full-time professional cricketers?

That's not easy. But what we have is the commitment in the squad. Even if the guys who are not full time cannot make it, they inspire with their work ethic. We have 9-10 players who work or study. They try hard to find time to train for five sessions a week. Whether it is early in the morning or late at night, they train. That says a lot about their commitment, which helps our team. The guys work bloody hard to get to this level and also make a lot of sacrifices. I know it is not ideal, but it works for us as we have fantastic camaraderie in the squad.

What is the support and infrastructure for Cricket like in Netherlands, considering football and hockey are two of the more popular sports in your country?

There is absolutely no doubt that football and hockey are massive sports in Netherlands, cricket is a minor sport. We have a committed bunch of hardcore supporters. It is a developing sport. It would be great if more people become aware of cricket. We are all really trying hard. Our performances as a national team is really important to gain some exposure for the sport in Netherlands.

The year of the rabbit

Updated at: 1814 PST,  Friday, February 04, 2011
The main focus of the Reliance ICC Player Rankings is to determine who the peakperformers in world cricket
are, be they in Test cricket or in the
One-Day International format of the game. However, as we enter the Chinese Year of the Rabbit, we examine the other
end of the scale - the true 'rabbits' with the bat - those batsmen who
can often be found lurking at number eleven praying they are not required to make it
to the crease with a bat in their hands.
Firstly, we need to set some parameters. It is relatively straightforward to discover the players who have achieved the highest number of Ratings points, but how should we judge the lowest? A player who debuts and fails to score has a total of zero points, but that isn't really a fair way of measuring his lowest point. So we have two points of reference in order to help us discover the true 'rabbits' of the world game.

Secondly, it is probably only really fair to limit our investigations to the Test arena. This is due to the fact that in the ODI game, players batting down the order only have a limited amount of time in which to make an impression, and often they fall early on in the quest for quick runs. In addition, they bat far more irregularly than their top-order colleagues.

In order to have a 'full' rating, a player has to have batted at least forty times in his career. To date, a total of 551 players have managed this, so more than enough to be getting on with. They range from Sachin Tendulkar with his 290 innings - 51 of which he has converted into centuries - to the fifteen batsman including George Headley and Dilhara Fernando to have batted on exactly forty occasions in their Test careers.

Of these 551 players it will probably come as no surprise to discover the names of the players with the best and worst batting averages. Don Bradman's average of 99.94 is more than 50% better than anyone else, and at the other end of the spectrum, Chris Martin's current average of 2.53 is comfortably worse than anyone else. In fact he would need to score 71 in his next innings to edge ahead of Bhagwat Chandrasekhar.

Returning to the Ratings, whereas when we look at the high flyers we examine their highest-ever points totals, here we are interested in their lowest points totals, once the player has qualified for a full Rating. So - how do they stack up? Here are the lowest batting Ratings achieved once a player has played the required forty Test innings:

Steyn says Sehwag and White are the ones to watch at CWC 2011

Updated at: 1814 PST,  Friday, February 04, 2011
With the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 just around the corner, South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn tips India's opening batsman Virender Sehwag and Australia's Cameron White as two players who will be key to their respective sides at the upcoming tournament on this week's ICC Cricket World Radio Show.

"I think the players that you're most weary of are from India at this tournament as it's in their home country. As an opening bowler, you want to get someone like Virender Sehwag out early because he's very dangerous in those first 10 overs when the ball can travel lightning-fast with the pitch conditions in the sub-continent.

"You've got to have good game plans for someone like him and then there are some other bigger hitters who come in to take part in the later stages of the game who can be destructive in the power plays – players like Australia's Cameron White, can take the game away from you," says Steyn.

Steyn also admits his favourite ever World Cup moment is from fellow South African and current Kenya assistant coach, Jonty Rhodes, who also features on the show this week.

"My favourite ICC Cricket World Cup moment is from 1992 when Jonty Rhodes ran out Pakistan's Inzamam Ul Haq. I had a poster of that dive in my room throughout primary school and most of high school so that would definitely go down as my favourite World Cup moment ever," says Steyn.

The show can be used in whole or part by radio stations that want cricket content, while the public can also download it straight from the ICC website at http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/media_interactive_zone/podcast.php.

Also on this week's show, former Proteas batsman Rhodes talks about his work as assistant coach with the Kenya side as it prepares for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

Rhodes, who is currently with the side training in Dubai, says: "I've come in to help the Kenya team with their fielding as well as their batting as I've a bit of experience in that too. I'm here to provide them with advice and help them to prepare this Cricket World Cup as best I can. They have a great attitude and play very much for the love of the game."

Finally, Hong Kong coach Charlie Burke reflects on his team's victory over Papua New Guinea to secure the trophy at Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 3 in Hong Kong.

"It's fantastic to be promoted into Division 2 and to top it off by winning the tournament was really good for the guys which will hopefully give them confidence going into the next division," says Burke.

Apart from these exclusive interviews, the show has the usual round up of cricketing news plus an update of the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test and ODI cricket.

The 15-minute ICC Cricket World audio show has been put together by the ICC's global broadcast partner, ESPN STAR Sports.

Sehwag feels India is poised to create history

Updated at: 1814 PST,  Friday, February 04, 2011
Virender Sehwag is not concerned of the injuries and dip in form to some of India's key players ahead of World Cup and feels that his side is primed to win the title in front of the home crowd.

Sehwag himself is coming out of a shoulder injury, Gautam Gambhir is recuperating from a hand injury while Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina are struggling for form. But the dashing opener contended that every cricketer goes through the rough patch at some point of time.

"I am not worried with all these (injuries and slump in form to some players). Sometimes you perform well and sometimes you don't. I was not performing well in 2006- 07 but my time came in 2008, 2009 and 2010. I performed well and scored runs in both one- dayers and Tests. These things happen in every player's career. I am not concerned," he said.

"Time is coming for Indian batsmen to perform in front of the home crowd. I am looking forward to that. Everyone has not been scoring big hundreds of late but now is the time for us with World Cup round the corner. I am confident everybody will score," said Sehwag.

Asked about playing under pressure of huge expectations and a tough World Cup group comprising England, South Africa, West Indies and underdogs Bangladesh, Sehwag said the Indians have done their home work well to give their best shot at glory.

"Bangladeshi people would be expecting their side to beat us again like in 2007 World Cup. But this time we are prepared well and confident of beating them in Bangladesh. It's a revenge game for us. We will not take it lightly.

"We are playing in India and know the conditions better than other teams in our group. We know how wickets will behave. When we played against England last time, we have won 5- 0. Against South Africa, we have done well against them in their country and in India. We recently won the Test series 2- 1," he said.

"West Indies, they have got good players in Kieron Pollard and Chris Gayle and if they click on, it's difficult for us but India has a very strong side in Sachin, Gambhir, Pathan, Kohli, Yuvraj, Dhoni and Raina. I am looking forward to see Yusuf Pathan in this World Cup," he said.

Sehwag said it's a special moment for him with World Cup happening in India.

"World Cup is coming to India and it is my third. Every cricketer wants to play the World Cup and I am lucky enough to have plated two. I am very lucky that I am playing at home. All the players are very happy that it is happening in India. I hope we will deliver and give our best shot. If the day belongs to us, we can beat any side," said Sehwag.

Pak trio charged with 'spot-fixing'

Updated at: 1614 PST,  Friday, February 04, 2011 LONDON: British prosecutors on Friday charged three Pakistan cricketers with taking bribes to fix incidents in an international match in England last year.

Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir are accused of fixing certain incidents, such as the bowling of no-balls at pre-agreed times, during the fourth test at Lord's last August.

Britain's Crown Prosecution Service said the trio, along with a fourth man, sporting agent Mazhar Majeed, had been charged with conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments and with conspiracy to cheat.

"These charges relate to allegations that Mr Majeed accepted money from a third party to arrange for the players to bowl `no balls' on 26 and 27 August 2010, during Pakistan's Fourth Test at Lord's Cricket Ground in London," said Simon Clements, head of the CPS Special Crime Division.

He said Majeed had been ordered to appear at London's City of Westminster Magistrates Court on March 17.

"Summonses for the same court date have been issued for the three players and they have been asked to return to this country voluntarily, as they agreed to do in September last year," Clements said.

"Their extradition will be sought should they fail to return," he added

Afridi named skipper for mega event: Intikhab

Updated at: 0619 PST,  Friday, February 04, 2011
LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) late on Thursday night resolved to retain Shahid Khan Afridi as captain to lead the Pakistan side in the cricket World Cup, to be held from February 19 to April 2 in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Pakistan team manager Intikhab Alam claimed this while talking to media after Pakistan won an ODI series against Kiwis by 3-1 after 17 years in New Zealand.

The PCB announced their 15-man squad for the showpiece event on January 18 but did not announce a skipper until today (Friday).

Pakistan’s current limited-overs captain Shahid Afridi and the Test skipper Misbahul Haq were the two contenders for leading the team in the World Cup.

They downplayed the ongoing row but former players lashed out PCB, saying the decision was likely to harm team’s unity.

Afridi had earlier said: “It would not be an issue for me if I am removed from captaincy.”

“It doesn’t make a difference whether Misbah leads the side or I lead the side because we both are playing for our country.”

Afridi had also dismissed reports of differences with Misbah. “We don’t have any differences. He is a good player who remains focused on his job,” Afridi maintained.

UK to announce decision on trio today

Updated at: 0830 PST,  Friday, February 04, 2011
LONDON: British prosecutors will announce on Friday whether three Pakistan cricketers accused of taking bribes to fix incidents in an international match in England last year will be charged with criminal offences.

Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were questioned by London police over claims they fixed certain incidents, such as the bowling of no-balls at pre-agreed times, during the fourth test at Lord's last August.

All three deny any wrongdoing.

A spokesman for Britain's Crown Prosecution Service said the decision on whether to charge them would be given shortly after 1100 GMT by Simon Clements, the head of its Special Crime Division.

A fourth man, sporting agent, Mazhar Majeed will also learn if he is to face charges of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers.

Former test captain Butt, and fast bowlers Asif and Amir have been suspended by the International Cricket Council while the allegations are investigated.

An International Cricket Council anti-corruption tribunal will announce on Saturday its verdict on the "spot-fixing" allegations. If they are found guilty, they face lengthy career-threatening bans.
