England stars enjoy rankings rise after Trent Bridge victory

England's Ian Bell has broken into the top five in the Reliance ICC Test Rankings after recording a career-high batting rating following his brilliant 159 against India at Trent Bridge. And Stuart Broad's all-round heroics have seen him climb to third in the all-rounder rankings, while he has also jumped to seventh place in the bowling table following match figures of 8-76.Bell, who recorded his fourth century in the space of six Test Matches, has recorded a new career-high rating and is just 16 rating points behind England and county teammate Jonathan Trott, who has slipped two places in the rankings to fourth position Matt Prior (21st), Stuart Broad (44th) and Tim Bresnan (joint 75th) have also achieved new career-high ratings following England's 319-run victory which gave it a 2-0 lead in the four-match series. However, it is not all good news for England's batters, as Alastair Cook has slipped six places to 11th position following a disappointing series in which he has made just 20 runs in four innings.Rahul Dravid, who made his second consecutive Test match hundred of the series, has continued his climb up the rankings, rising four places to joint 11th, and is on the verge of breaking back into the top 10, with his best batting rating since India's last Test series in England in 2007. There are already three India batters in the top 10, with Sachin Tendulkar (third), VVS Laxman (ninth) and Virender Sehwag (10th) just ahead of Dravid.Tim Bresnan has risen 14 places in the bowling rankings, following his first five-wicket Test haul, to put him 25th on the list, while his innings of 90 in the second innings has helped him rise to 13th in the all-rounder standings.England is now on course to take top spot on the Reliance ICC Test Championship table. A series win of two clear Tests in the four-match series (2-0 or 3-1) will see Andrew Strauss's men topple India as the number-one Test side in the world. The table is updated only at the end of each series.Elsewhere, some of Bangladesh's star players will be eyeing the opportunity to climb the rankings when they face Zimbabwe in the one-off Test match which begins in Harare on Thursday.Shakib Al Hasan will be looking to regain ground on Stuart Broad in the all-rounder rankings, having lost his third position as a result of the Trent Bridge Test, and he will also be looking to improve his ninth-place bowling ranking and close the 12-point rating gap on eighth ranked Ishant Sharma.Bangladesh's top-ranked batsman is Tamim Iqbal in 19th position and, with just 44 points separating the 10th-placed and 20th-placed players, this is a clear opportunity for him to improve his position

ICC joins forces with broadcasters to hold third-umpire technology training

The International Cricket Council is partnering with Ten Sports and Sri Lanka Cricket to deliver the first simulated TV umpire technology training course at Galle, Sri Lanka, on 30 August 2011The course will be run by the highly respected Australian umpire and member of the Emirates ICC Elite Umpires panel Simon Taufel, who has been named Umpire of the Year at the LG ICC Awards on five occasions.Mr Taufel said: "This is a great initiative which will benefit the elite panel umpires and also the international panel umpires from Sri Lanka. The decision-making module will involve training on run out, stumping, clean catches, bump ball, lbw (Decision Review System), caught (DRS), boundaries and front-foot no-balls. While working through the various decision-making elements, there will also be a focus on effective communication skills.ICC Referees' and Umpires' Manager Vince van der Bijl said: "We would like to thank our partners, Sri Lanka Cricket and Ten Sports, in helping us develop this TV umpire simulation programme, that will be run by Simon. This is the first simulated training course we have run and we are delighted with the extension of our training programme aimed at developing the world's best match officials.Chief Executive of Taj TV Ten Sports Atul Pande added: "Taj TV (Ten Sports) is delighted to partner with the ICC for the launch of this third-umpire technology simulation training programme with the aim of developing world-class umpires."The occasion is all the more significant for us as this pilot program involves Sri Lanka Cricket – a long standing partner of Ten Sports. We have no doubt that this project will be a great success and will pave the way for both the ICC and Ten Sports to work in close partnership to replicate projects of this nature in other member countries in the near future. We wish everyone involved in this project the very best.Chairman of the interim committee of Sri Lanka Cricket Upali Dharmadasa added: "Sri Lanka Cricket is grateful to both ICC and Ten Sports for taking the initiative and developing this unique training programme. We are confident that the local umpires will benefit from this programme and we are grateful to ICC for choosing Sri Lanka as the location to run the pilot programme just prior to the first Test between Sri Lanka and Australia. SLC is committed to work with ICC and Ten Sports to find ways to improve the quality of umpiring among the local umpires by encouraging such programmes and trying to make it a regular feature.

Strauss expects more from England after India rout

England captain Andrew Strauss insisted his team could become a better side after thrashing India by the huge margin of 319 runs in the second Test at Trent Bridge. Victory, achieved with more than a day to spare, was a record in terms of runs in all 101 England-India Tests and left Strauss's side 2-0 up in this four-match series It also left England on course to replace India at the top of the ICC's Test Championship table - something they will achieve if they win the third Test at Edgbaston starting on August 10. England, however, did not have things all their own way after losing the toss at Trent Bridge and being inserted in seamer-friendly conditionsThey were 124 for eight in their first innings before man-of-the-match Stuart Broad made 64 to boost the total to 221. And with India threatening a big first innings lead fast-medium bowler Broad, on his Nottinghamshire home ground, took a hat-trick on his way to Test-best figures of six for 46.Ian Bell then produced a sublime 159, an innings whose quality threatened to be overshadowed by a lapse of concentration that saw him run out, then sportingly reinstated by India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, after he carelessly left his crease off the last ball before tea on Sunday.England's imposing second innings 544 also saw Tim Bresnan, in for the injured Chris Tremlett, contribute 90 down the order before the seamer took a Test-best five for 48 as India, chasing a record 478 to win, were skittled out for 158 on Monday. We had to dig very deep - we were twice in a position where India looked very much like favourites to win the game - and we dragged it round," Strauss said. There were some outstanding individual performances. "There was Stuart, both with the ball and the bat in the first innings - to rescue our innings, and then turn the match on its head with the second new ball. But also Ian Bell and Tim Bresnan with the second-innings batting gave us breathing space. One of the real measures of a good side is whether they are able to come back from difficult circumstances. In the last two Test matches we've had to dig pretty deep, and it gives me a lot of pride to see guys putting their hands up and delivering when it matters," said Strauss, who also led England to a 196-run series-opening win at his Lord's home ground. It also fills me with a lot of confidence for the future that we can go on and become a better side said the Ashes-winning skipper.Meanwhile an elated Broad, whose place had been called into question before the first Test, said: "It helps getting a hat-trick on your home ground which is something I will look back on with a lot of pleasure.""I have looked to bowl a fuller length and the ball has swung for me. It's nice when cricket is going your way for a little while but it makes it even more special when you have had a pretty tough time over the last couple of months.Broad, the son of ex-England opener Chris, added: "We try to take the game by the scruff of the neck and we'll be looking to do the same at Edgbaston."As well as Tremlett (hamstring), England also have fitness concerns over batsman Jonathan Trott, who injured his shoulder fielding at Trent Bridge."We are not too sure on the injuries to both Trott and Tremlett at this stage but it's fantastic to see Stuart scoring runs as well as taking wickets and Tim Bresnan showing his all-round capabilities as well, said Strauss.

England crush India by 319 runs within four days

NOTTINGHAM: Tim Bresnan shone with both bat and ball as England crushed India by 319 runs at Trent Bridge here on Monday to win the second Test with more than a day to spare.England's victory, achieved despite Sachin Tendulkar's fifty, gave them a 2-0 lead in this four-match series as they looked to knock India off top spot in the ICC's Test Championship table.Andrew Strauss's side will replace India at the summit if they maintain or better their lead in the remaining two Tests.India set a record victory target of 478, were bowled out for 158 with Tendulkar top-scoring with 56 but still left searching for an unprecedented and elusive 100th international hundred.Bresnan, who earlier made 90 batting at number eight in England's second innings 544, did the bulk of the damage with a maiden Test five wicket haul of five wickets for 48 runs in 12 overs including two in two balls before tea.Only three India batsmen made double figure scores on Monday's fourth day, with Tendulkar the lone member of their powerful top order to achieve the feat.No team has made more in the fourth innings to win a Test than the 418 for seven posted by the West Indies against Australia at St John's, Antigua, in 2002/03.Before lunch England, who won the first Test at Lord's by 196 runs, saw off Rahul Dravid, who made 117 in India's first innings, for just six when he was caught behind off a lifting delivery from man of the match Stuart Broad.Venkatsai Laxman, another of India's star batsmen, was then clean bowled by a superb James Anderson delivery for four.Opener Abhinav Mukund, dropped on nought, struggled to three off 41 balls before falling to Bresnan's fifth ball, a bouncer he gloved to first slip Strauss. And Bresnan succeeded with the short ball again when Suresh Raina hit a hook straight to substitute Scott Elstone at long leg.Tendulkar had struck some typically sublime straight drives off Anderson but he could do nothing as Bresnan, only playing in this match after fast bowler Chris Tremlett was injured, took two wickets in two balls.First Yuvraj Singh gloved a rising delivery to Alastair Cook at backward silly point and was out for eight.Next ball India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, inexplicably playing no shot, was lbw for a golden duck to leave the tourists 55 for six and Bresnan on a hat-trick at the start of his next over, which Harbhajan Singh survived.Tendulkar square-cut Bresnan for four to complete his first fifty of the series with his eighth four before Harbhajan slogged opposing off-spinner Graeme Swann for six.But Tendulkar fell when he was undone by a good length inswinger from Anderson, taking his wicket for the seventh time in eight Tests. Harbhajan exited for 46 when a hook off Bresnan was caught by Elstone. That wicket gave 26-year-old Yorkshire seamer Bresnan, in his eighth match at this level, a new Test-best, surpassing his four for 50 against Australia in Melbourne in December.Broad ended the match by bowling last man Shanthakumaran Sreesanth for nought.England resumed Monday on 441 for six with Ian Bell having made 159 after being sportingly reprieved by Dhoni following his run out for 137 on Sunday when incorrectly assuming the ball had gone dead.Matt Prior, again frustrating India, was 64 not out and Bresnan 47 not out.Wicketkeeper Prior was out for 73 to end a seventh-wicket stand of 119 at nearly a run-a-ball when he was caught behind off Praveen Kumar, who led India's attack with four for 124.Broad, who'd top-scored with 64 in England's first innings 221 and had then taken a hat-trick on his way to Test-best figures of six for 46 in India's 288, followed up with 44 on his Nottinghamshire home ground. But a ball after Broad was run out, Bresnan's quest for a maiden Test hundred ended when he fended Kumar to Dravid in the gully Bresnan, whose Test-best score remains the 91 he made against Bangladesh in Dhaka last year, faced 118 balls with 17 fours. The third Test starts at Edgbaston on August 10.

England win second Test against India

NOTTINGHAM: England beat India by 319 runs to win the second Test at Trent Bridge with more than a day to spare here on Monday and go 2-0 up in the four-match series.Brief scores:England 221 (S Broad 64; P Kumar 3-45, I Sharma 3-66, S Sreesanth 3-77) and 544 (I Bell 159, T Bresnan 90, M Prior 73, E Morgan 70, K Pietersen 63; P Kumar 4-124) v India 288 (R Dravid 117, Yuvraj Singh 62, V Laxman 54; S Broad 6-46) and 158 (S Tendulkar 56; T Bresnan 5-48, J Anderson 3-51)Result: England won by 319 runs

India set 478 to win second Test against England

NOTTINGHAM: India were set what would be a record total of 478 to win the second Test after England were dismissed for 544 in their second innings on the fourth day at Trent Bridge here on Monday No side has scored more runs to win in the fourth innings of a Test than the 418 for seven made by the West Indies against Australia at St John's, Antigua, in 2002/03.India's target was also well in excess of the corresponding Trent Bridge Test record of 284 for six set by England against New Zealand in 2004.Ian Bell, dramatically reprieved by India on 137 when the visitors withdrew a run out appeal after the batsman mistakenly thought the ball was dead, batted superbly for 159 before he was dismissed on Sunday's third day Tim Bresnan, recalled for this match in place of injured Surrey fast bowler Chris Tremlett, made 90 batting at number eight on Monday after Matt Prior (73), Eoin Morgan (70) and Kevin Pietersen (63) had also posted fifties. Medium-pacer Praveen Kumar led India's attack with four for 124 in 36 overs.England lead the series 1-0 after a 196-run first Test victory at Lord's.If they win this four-match contest by a margin of 2-0 or better, they will replace India at the top of the ICC's Test Championship table

Bresnan stars as England thrash India

With the 1993 tournament cancelled due to political tensions, the official fifth edition returned to Sharjah after 11 years. India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan were tied on points after the preliminary round but the former two teams went in by virtue of a better run rate. For the third successive time India defeated Sri Lanka in the final. Led by a magnificent third-wicket stand of 175 off 184 balls by Sidhu and Mohammad Azharuddin, India cruised to an eight -wicket victory. This win took India's overall win tally to four, the most for the Asia Cup.
1997, Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka lifted the 1997 Pepsi Asia Cup by defeating India by eight wickets at home. Sri Lanka, having lifted the World Cup the year before, were a force to be reckoned with. The world champions made use of a slow surface to defeat Pakistan by 15 runs in the tournament opener, brushed aside India thanks to a brilliant Ranatunga century, and demolished Bangladesh courtesy Sanath Jayasuriya's 83-ball 108. Ranatunga and Jayasuriya starred in the final in Colombo as well, a triumph that followed their success in the Singer Akai Cup and Independence Cup in India earlier in the year.

Sri Lanka shrugged off an indifferent season with a 25-run win over India in Colombo in the finals, after losing just one match all tournament. Hong Kong and the UAE also participated but did little of note; Bangladesh beat Hong Kong by 116 runs to open up their account in the tournament history. Pakistan began well only to crash out due to an error in net run rate calculation and India came through despite a couple sluggish displays. But Sri Lanka once again proved dominant at home, defending a total of 228 with some tigerish fielding and top-class spin bowling from Jayasuriya and Upul Chandana.

In the other match, Germany will play Gibraltar.Group B of the ICC European Under 19 Division Two championship saw both matches record a result with France and Israel beating Norway and Belgium respectively A delayed start at Cronkbourne reduced the match between France and Norway to 47 overs, and France quickly had the Norwegians on the back foot with captain Thomas Liddiard bowling well with three wickets to reduce Norway to 21-4.France let Norway back in a little though, conceding 21 runs in extras, and when rain brought an early end to their innings, Norway had scored 86-6 in 27 overs. After a lengthy rain delay, during which both teams entertained themselves by watching the England v India Test match on television, play got back underway at 5.30pm, with France needing 93 in 25 overs to win the match.Sensing the prospect of more rain in the air, France set about chasing down the target in rapid fashion. Usman Shahid scored 41 from 39 balls and William Smati scored 38 in 31 balls to secure a nine wicket win for France in their final group game.In the Israel v Belgium game at King William's College, play started late, but it was the only game not to see a reduction in overs.Put into bat by Belgium, Israel scored 195-9 from their 50 overs, Josh Evans leading the way with 65. Belgium experimented with their bowlers, using nine in all, but Waqas Shafiq was the pick of the bunch with 4-35.In reply, Robert Sehmi scored a battling 42, but no other batsman reached double figures and Belgium were bowled out for 124, Raphael Schachat taking 5-23 Group B concludes tomorrow with Denmark playing Israel and Belgium playing Norway.

Trott and Anderson rise to second place in the world

England's Jonathan Trott and James Anderson have risen to second place in the Reliance ICC Test Rankings following their side's 196-run victory over India on Monday at Lord's Trott has climbed two places, above India's Sachin Tendulkar and Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, to second spot in the batting rankings, after his innings of 70 and 22 in the 2000th Test in history which was the opening game of the four-match series.Anderson's seven-wicket haul in the match, including his 11th five-wicket Test haul of 5-65 in the second innings, has seen him overtake teammate Graeme Swann in the bowling rankings, with a new career best ranking rating.Kevin Pietersen, whose magnificent unbeaten double century earned him the Man of the Match Award, has returned to the top 20, climbing 14 places to joint 15th in the rankings alongside Rahul Dravid, who rose seven places following his unbeaten first innings hundred. The other centurion in the match, England wicket-keeper Matt Prior, has also achieved a new career-best rating, rising 10 places to 21st, and is now on the brink of entering the world's top twenty.Chris Tremlett's four wickets in the match have helped him to ninth place in the rankings, also achieving a new career best rating, while Stuart Broad climbs four places to join Harbhajan Singh, who falls four places, in joint 11th place. Board has also moved to fifth in the all-rounders ranking table India still has two bowlers in the top ten of the rankings, with Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma lying in fifth and seventh place respectively while in the batting top 10, along with Sachin Tendulkar, India have VVS Laxman in seventh while Virender Sehwag, who missed the Lord's Test through injury, has dropped to 10th

Clarke aims to build on Australia's lead at top of table

Australia captain Michael Clarke has revealed that he is determined for his side to maintain its lead at the top of the Reliance ICC ODI Rankings table.

Following the annual update of the Reliance ICC ODI Championship, Australia has extended its lead at the top of the table to 12 points, with Sri Lanka and India leading the chasing pack Clarke said that his side is looking to maintain its position in the table and is already building towards The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 which will be held in Australia and New Zealand."This Australian side is extremely proud to be ranked the number one one day side in the world. However, we realise there is some significant work to be done if this is to remain the case  said Clarke Being knocked out of the ICC Cricket World Cup at the quarter-final stage was very disappointing and our group has already started its planning to reclaim the title on our home shoresThis summer in Australia will be a great stepping stone towards this aim as we take on World Cup champions India and runners up Sri Lanka in a return of the tri-series competition throughout Australia The 50 over game proved itself an exciting and unpredictable format during the tournament on the ub-continent and we are looking forward to the fans supporting what we are sure will be another great event in 2015.The annual rankings update is carried out to ensure the Reliance ICC ODI Championship table continues to reflect recent form. As such, the new table only includes results from matches played after 1 August 2009, with older results from between 1 August 2008 - 31 July 2009 being discarded. Despite capturing the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, India falls one place to third in the updated rankings. This is due to the fact that in the 2008 09 rating year  now dropped, India won 17 ODIs and lost only five games, which was easily the best record during that period. In the same year Australia won 11 and lost 11 ODIs and so now Michael Clarke?s side are no longer penalised for that relatively poor year.In the past 12 months, India has lost nine ODIs, including its last two ODIs against eighth ranked West Indies and one in the group stages of the ICC Cricket World Cup, and has a win-loss ratio that is poorer than World Cup finalists Sri Lanka and quarter finalists Australia and South Africa. Note that the rankings give equal weight to all ODIs played over the year, with no extra points for performances in the ICC Cricket World Cup.The number one ranked side in the Reliance ICC ODI Championship on 1 April 2012 will receive US $175,000, while the second placed side will earn US $75,000

Bell leads England into strong position against India

NOTTINGHAM: Ian Bell maiden Test hundred against India allied to a sporting reprieve saw England into a commanding lead on the third day of the second Test at Trent Bridge here on Sunday.England, in their second innings, were 441 for six at the close, giving them a lead of 374 runs.Bell made a superb 159 but only after being run out when on 137 to the last ball before tea.Having completed three runs with Eoin Morgan following a misfield by Praveen Kumar, he sprinted off the field believing the umpires had called time'.In fact the ball was still live'Morgan gestured to his partner to regain his ground and after calling in the third umpire, the on-field officials gave a stunned Bell out.England coach Andy Flower and captain Andrew Strauss went to the visitors dressing room at tea to ask India, whose coach is ex-England supremo Duncan Fletcher, if they wanted the appeal to stand. And minutes later India withdrew their appeal.Umpires Marais Erasmus of South Africa and Pakistan's Asad Rauf emerged after tea to boos from spectators, unaware the decision had been reversed, as did India before the jeers became cheers when Bell resumed his innings.Although Bell made only 22 more runs following the reversal of a decision which was quite correct, he added an additional 69 with Morgan in what turned out to be a fourth wicket partnership of 104.Bell's eventual 159 included 24 fours and was made in nearly five-and-a-half hours at the crease
He was finally out when his cut off part-time left-arm spinner Yuvraj Singh was caught by Venkatsai Laxman at slip.Left-hander Morgan went to a 60-ball fifty, featuring seven fours, with a straight six against off-spinner Harbhajan Singh. But the advent of the new ball, as it had done in India's first innings on Saturday, led to wickets with medium-pacer Praveen Kumar taking two for five runs in nine balls.Morgan was caught behind for 70 before Jonathan Trott, batting down the order after suffering a shoulder injury while fielding on Saturday, gloved a rising delivery to Rahul Dravid in the slips.England were 339 for six at that point, but wicketkeeper Matt Prior again proved a thorn in India's side with the bat, hooking fast bowler hanthakumaran Sreesanth for six on his way to an unbeaten 64. He received excellent support from Tim Bresnan 47 not out, in an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 102. Ealrier, Bell had helped add 162 for the third wicket before Kevin Pietersen (63) was caught behind off Sreesanth by India captain and wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.Bell, 84 not out at lunch and scoring briskly, went to 98 with a fluent cover-driven four off Kumar. Then a leg-glanced two off Sreesanth saw the 29-year-old Bell, batting at number three because of Warwickshire colleague Trott's injury, to his 15th hundred in 67 Tests and fourth this year.England resumed on 24 for onestill 43 runs behind despite Stuart Broad taking a hat-trick on Saturday on his way to Test-best figures of six for 46 on his Nottinghamshire home ground.India's first innings of 288 also saw Dravid make 117 his 34th Test century and second in as many matches after his 103 not out during England's 196-run first Test win at Lord's.England will replace India at the top of the ICC's Test Championship table if they win this four-match series 2-0 or better.

Bell tolls for India as England edge ahead

NOTTINGHAM: Ian Bell was in sight of a century after guiding England into the lead against India in the second Test at Trent Bridge here on Sunday.England were 130 for two in their second innings at lunch on the third day 63 runs in front as they looked to go 2-0 up in this four-match series.Bell, showing great fluency, timing and panache, was 84 not out, after being promoted to number three following an injury to Warwickshire colleague Jonathan Trott. Kevin Pietersen was unbeaten on 20.The third wicket duo had shared a stand so far worth 73 after England captain Andrew Strauss was the only batsman dismissed in the session. England resumed on 24 for one, still 43 runs behind despite Stuart Broad taking a hat-trick Saturday on his way to Test-best figures of six for 46 on his Nottinghamshire home ground. India's first innings of 288 also saw Rahul Dravid make 117 his 34th Test century and second in as many matches after his 103 not out during England's 196-run first Test win at Lord's.Strauss was six not out and Bell nine not out after Trott was unable to bat at first-wicket down because of a shoulder injury suffered while fielding on Saturday.England started positively Sunday with Bell forcing Shanthakumaran Sreesanth for four and later driving him down the ground. In between those shots, left-hander Strauss off-drove Praveen Kumar for a well-struck boundary. But a partnership of 51 ended when Strauss was induced into pushing outside off-stump by Sreesanth and edged to India captain and wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.Strauss's exit for 16 left England 57 for two.Dhoni brought on occasional left-arm spinner Yuvraj Singh, once branded a "pie-chucker" by Pietersen, who resisted the temptation to hit out against his old antagonist.Bell completed a 73-ball fifty, featuring 10 fours, with boundaries off fast bowler Ishant Sharma, a leg-glance followed by a flick through a vacant square-leg.Harbhajan Singh was introduced into the attack only for Bell to sweep his fourth ball to the fine-leg rope before a back foot force for four against the off-spinner took him into the 80s.Meanwhile a responsible Pietersen took 52 balls for his first boundary a sweep off Harbhajan

Hat-trick hero Broad revels in return to form

NOTTINGHAM: England seamer Stuart Broad said his "confidence was back" after taking a hat-trick against India in the second Test at Trent Bridge here on Saturday. The 25-year-old fast-medium bowler wreaked havoc with the new ball, having India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni caught in the slips, trapping Harbhajan Singh lbw and then clean bowling Praveen Kumar to become only the 12th England bowler in 134 years of Test cricket to take a hat-trick.He was also the first bowler to achieve the feat against India and the first to do so in a Test at Trent Bridge, the 25-year-old fast-medium bowler's Nottinghamshire home ground.Broad saw his treble propel him to Test-best figures of six for 46 -- a return that included a stunning spell of five for no wicket in 16 balls. The final victim in Test cricket's previous hat-trick, achieved by Australia fast bowler Peter Siddle against England in Brisbane in November, Broad had earlier claimed the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar, caught at first slip by Andrew Strauss for 16.That meant Tendulkar was again left searching for an unprecedented 100th international hundred. But India still built a lead thanks to Rahul Dravid, whose 117 was his second century in as many Tests after his 103 not out at Lord's.The advent of the new ball, taken by England as soon as it was available with India on 258 for four, turned the tide with the tourists losing their last six wickets for 21 runs. "We knew that new-ball period would be a huge hour for us," Broad said. "Strauss asked as at tea if we could raise our intensity during that hour to put some pressure on the Indian batsman. "Fortunately there was some swing and the edges came our way. We've got ourselves back in this game.As for his hat-trick, Broad said: "It was something that hasn't particularly sunk in. "I think it's my third but we are going back to Oakham Schools Under-15s for the last one. It was a nice feeling but it won't mean much if we don't go on and win this Test," Broad, the son of former England opener Chris, said.Broad's haul came after he top-scored in England's first innings 221 with 64 batting at No 9."The confidence is back," said Broad. "I don't think I bowled particularly badly at the start of the year, I just didn't have much luck.Venkatsai Laxman, the 'other' member of India's celebrated batting trio, made a useful 54 on Saturday. England though were convinced Laxman was caught behind for 27 and asked for Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf's not out decision to be reviewed. But the Hotspot technology in use this series detected no edge.Former England captain Michael Vaughan, on social networking site Twitter, then asked: "Has Vaseline on the outside edge of the bat saved Laxman's day?" amidst concerns the substance can 'fool' Hotspot. However, Broad said: "I think it's just HotSpot, we've found the really faint edges don't show up. It's just one of those."I actually had a cheeky feel of his edge when the ball went past, but there was no Vaseline or anything on there.England closed on 24 for one in their second innings, still 43 runs behind, and Broad added: "It will be a massive day tomorrow. We need to bat big and one guy needs to get a big hundred then we are right in the game because bowling last on that wicket could be an advantage for us.

India 288 all out against England

NOTTINGHAM: India were dismissed for 288 in reply to England's first innings 221, a lead of 67 runs, on the second day of the second Test at Trent Bridge here on Saturday.Stuart Broad took a hat-trick on his way to Test-best figures of six for 46 on his Nottinghamshire home ground while India's Rahul Dravid top-scored with 117 his second century in successive Tests.England lead the four-match series 1-0

Dravid holds firm as Tendulkar eyes history

NOTTINGHAM: Rahul Dravid led India's revival against England in the second Test at Trent Bridge here on Saturday.India were 117 for two in reply to England's first innings 221, a deficit of 104 runs, at lunch on the second day as they looked to level the four-match series at 1-1.Dravid was 44 not out and Sachin Tendulkar, bidding to become the first batsman to score 100 international hundreds, 14 not out. Earlier Dravid and Venkatsai Laxman (54) kept England at bay with a second-wicket stand of 93 after coming together at nought for one after India lost opener Abhinav Mukund to the first ball of their reply on Friday.India resumed with Dravid, second behind Tendulkar in the all-time list of Test run-makers, seven not out and Laxman 13 not out.The experienced duo took the attack to England's seamers with four boundaries in as many balls. Laxman cover-drove James Anderson to the rope and Dravid, who scored a first innings century during England's 196-run first Test win at Lord's, clipped Stuart Broad legside. Then Laxman, in a superb piece of timing, guided Broad behind point for four with no more than a defensive push.England were convinced they had Laxman, on 27, caught behind off Anderson and asked for a referral after Asad Rauf rejected their raucous appeals. But the replay technology in use this series detected no edge umpire's decision was upheld.England captain Andrew Strauss was unable to bowl Graeme Swann as the off-spinner was off the field with a hand injury suffered when batting Friday.Meanwhile Laxman completed a 104-ball fifty when he cover-drove Tim Bresnan, in for the injured Chris Tremlett, for the 10th boundary of his innings. But Laxman was undone soon afterwards by a lifting Bresnan delivery he could only fend to wicketkeeper Matt Prior to leave India 93 for two.His exit brought in Tendulkar, who walked out to a standing ovation from all around the ground. Tendulkar, dismissed for 34 and 12 when hampered by a viral infection during England's at Lord's, got off the mark with a superb back-foot cover-driven four against occasional medium-pacer Jonathan Trott.England will replace India at the top of the ICC's Test Championship table if they win this series 2-0 or better.

Nottingham Test: India to start the day at 24 for one

NOTTINGHAM: Now it is up to the Indian batsmen to rise to the occasion, as the bowlers giving their hundred percent did their job well. The Indians will go to bat today at 24 for one loss. The first day of Nottingham Trent Bridge went to the Indian bowlers, as none of the first-eight England batsmen could make a formidable partnership against them, resulting in the fall of 8 wickets for a paltry 124 runs. And then coming from behind Stewart Broad batting responsibly did a fine job for somewhat rescuing his team from a total collapse by scoring substantial 64 runs, enabling his team to make 221 all out.Praveen Kumar, Sreesanth and Ishant Sharma took three wickets each.India in reply at the end of the play had scored 24 for one loss. VVS Laxman at 13 and Rahul Dravid at 7 remained not out. India needs 197 more runs to wipe out the England’s lead

Saturday, July 30, 2011

Broad rescues England from total collapse

NOTTINGHAM: Stuart Broad again proved a thorn in India's side with the bat as he rescued England from total collapse on the first day of the second Test at Trent Bridge here on Friday.England collapsed to 88 for six after losing the toss in overcast, swing-friendly, conditions. But Broad, batting at number nine on his Nottinghamshire home ground, top-scored with 64 in a total of 221.India at stumps were 24 for one in reply, a deficit of 197 runs, as they looked to level this four-match series at 1-1 after losing the first Test at Lord's by 196 runs. Rahul Dravid, who made an unbeaten century at Lord's, was seven not out and Venkatsai Laxman 13 not out after India lost opener Abhinav Mukund to the first ball of their innings when he pushed at James Anderson and was caught in the gully by Kevin Pietersen.Earlier, India's pace trio of Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, recalled in place of the injured Zaheer Khan, all took three wickets apiece.England captain Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell were the only other batsmen apart from Broad to make more than 30.The hosts came into this match knowing they would replace India at the top of the ICC's Test rankings if they won this 2-0 or better. But during the last decade India have either won or squared several series after losing the first Test. And although they were without left-arm quick Zaheer due to the hamstring injury that had forced him off the field early on at Lord's, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni opted to field after winning the toss.Sharma made the breakthrough when he had Alastair Cook lbw for two before Sreesanth had Jonathan Trott, on four, caught by second slip Laxman.Pietersen, who made 202 not out at Lord's, survived a huge lbw shout from Kumar on 17.Kumar, risking disciplinary action, angrily questioned South African umpire Marais Erasmus's decision -- there are no lbw reviews this series because of Indian objections to ball-tracking technology -- at the end of the over before being pulled away by Harbhajan Singh.England, 69 for two at lunch, lost six wickets for 55 runs in the second session with Kumar striking twice in four balls.Five balls after lunch, Pietersen, on 29, was squared up by Sreesanth and nicked to third slip Suresh Raina.Swing bowler Kumar rocked England with a Test-best five for 106 at Lord's and, on Friday, the medium-pacer dismissed Strauss when a full-blooded drive was well-held by Raina. That same over saw 85 for four become 85 for five when Kumar's outswinger to Eoin Morgan had the left-hander lbw for nought.att Prior had frustrated India with an unbeaten century after England had collapsed to 62 for five in their second innings at Lord's.But on Friday he made just one before edging Sreesanth to first slip Dravid.Bell was dropped on 22 by Dravid but he got himself out when he flat-footedly cut at Sharma and was caught behind by wicketkeeper Dhoni.Broad and Nottinghamshire team-mate Graeme Swann hit out during an entertaining stand of 73 in just 70 balls. But their ninth-wicket partnership ended when Swann, who needed an X-ray as a result, gloved a rising delivery from Kumar to Mukund on 28.Left-handed batsman Broad, who made an unbeaten 74 in the second innings at Lord's, on-drove Kumar for his seventh four to complete a 56-ball fifty featuring seven fours before he was last man out when he holed out to off-spinner Harbhajan.

England reduced to 124-8 at tea by India

NOTTINGHAM: India's seamers reduced England to 124 for eight at tea on the first day of the second Test at Trent Bridge here on Friday as they looked to level the series.India, albeit in helpful, overcast conditions, took six wickets for 55 runs in 24 overs after lunch as they ripped through England's top order.Stuart Broad (six not out) and Graeme Swann (nought not out) were unbeaten on their Nottinghamshire home ground.England, 69 for two at lunch, lost four wickets for 15 runs in a dramatic slump at the start of the second session, with Praveen Kumar striking twice in four balls.Five balls after lunch, Kevin Pietersen, on 29, was squared up by fast bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, in for the injured Zaheer Khan, and third slip Suresh Raina held the edge to leave England 73 for three. Kumar had rocked England with his command of swing while taking a Test-best five for 106 in the hosts' 196-run series-opening victory at Lord's.The medium-pacer had England captain Andrew Strauss, who'd 'got in', out for 32, when the left-hander's full-blooded drive flew to Raina, who held an excellent catch. And that same over saw 85 for four become 85 for five when a full-length outswinger to left-hander Eoin Morgan pitched in line and had the former Ireland international lbw for nought.Matt Prior had frustrated India with an unbeaten century after England had collapsed to 62 for five in their second innings at Lord's.But on Friday he managed just one before, playing at a ball from Sreesanth that left him, the wicketkeeper nicked straight to Rahul Dravid at first slip.England, in the face of some high-class swing and seam bowling, had lost three wickets for three runs in 23 balls to be 88 for six.Tim Bresnan, replacing injured fast bowler Chris Tremlett, was undone on 11 by a ball from Ishant Sharma that nipped away.Ian Bell, the last of England's frontline batsmen, was dropped on 22 by Dravid but he got himself out for 31 when he flat-footedly cut at Sharma and was caught behind by India captain and wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.England came into this match knowing they would replace India at the top of the ICC's Test rankings if they won this four-match series 2-0 or better. But during the last decade India have fought back to either win or square series after losing the first Test. And although they were without left-arm quick Zaheer due to the hamstring injury that had cut short his participation at Lord's, Dhoni fielded first.Sharma made the breakthrough when he had Alastair Cook lbw for two.Sreesanth struck with his fourth ball when Jonathan Trott, on four, drove at an outswinger and edged to Venkatsai Laxman at second slip.Pietersen, who made a man-of-the-match winning 202 not out at Lord's, survived a huge lbw shout from Kumar on 17, after walking across his stumps. Kumar, risking disciplinary action, angrily questioned South African umpire Marais Erasmus's decision -- there are no lbw reviews this series because of Indian objections to ball-tracking technology at the end of the over before being pulled away by team-mate Harbhajan Singh

England lose two early wickets after put into bat by India

NOTTINGHAM: India removed Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott cheaply as England reached lunch on 69 for two on the first day of the second test at Trent Bridge on Friday Captain Andrew Strauss was 29 not out and Kevin Pietersen unbeaten on 26 after runs were difficult to find in cloudy conditions which often produced prodigious swing.Cook was lbw to Ishant Sharma for two, though television replays suggested the ball may have gone over the stumps, while Trott was caught for four at second slip in Shanthakumaran Sreesanth's first over. England, who lead the four-match encounter 1-0 after winning the first test at Lord's, are seeking a sixth straight series victory. Strauss, on two, survived an appeal for lbw by Praveen Kumar when replays showed the ball may have pitched just outside leg stump. Pietersen injected some urgency, getting off the mark with a quick single off his first ball and later pulling Sreesanth through mid-wicket from two consecutive deliveries. When he was on 17, Pietersen was fortunate as he played across a straight ball from Kumar. He was hit on the pads and received the benefit of the doubt from South African umpire Marais Erasmus. At the end of the over an angry Kumar remonstrated with Erasmus and had to be dragged away by team mate Harbhajan Singh. Kumar could receive a caution from the match referee for his conduct.
