Pakistan cricket has something to rejoice

After a long spell of despair caused by conflicts and controversies, Pakistan cricket has at least two events to rejoice. Firstly, the great honour brought to Pakistan by a highly competent, honest and respected cricket personality called Aleem Dar and secondly the team’s success against Zimbabwe. For his excellent performance as an ICC umpire, Aleem deserves a bouquet studded with diamonds and rubies for becoming the world champion in the field of umpiring three times in a row. He won the rare award by delivering 100 percent accurate results in ODIs and Twenty20s and 98 percent in Test matches during the last one year.During the World Cup 2011 Aleem delivered 15 decisions all of them proving correct when challenged. This was because he relied on his own ability rather than technology. It indicates how much confidence he had on his knowledge of the game, ability and the sense of judgment. The awards were given in an ICC function held in London, surprisingly not attended by India although its team was there playing a series against England. They were perhaps not pleased by the honour bestowed upon Aleem.Unanimously voted by all cricket captains and members of the selection panel Aleem defeated strong competitors like Ian Gould and five time winner Simon Taufel. The sparkling honour brought to Pakistan by Aleem is the second great event to find a place in the annals of Pakistan cricket after Imran Khan’s triumph in the 1992 World Cup.The second event, not apparently as great, is Pakistan’s clean sweep over Zimbabwe in their recently concluded tour. By defeating the hosts in the series comprising one Test, three ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals, Pakistan achieved a 100 percent result. Win against Zimbabwe, being the bottom team in the ICC ranking the victory, is nothing much to boast about but still it is an achievement to boost the morale of the upcoming young players who played an active role in defeating the hosts. Although Misbahul Haq led the team with all the proficiency, Muhammad Hafeez emerged as an all-rounder heading for super stardom. As for the seniors, Younus Khan performed well because the Zimbabwe bowlers were not capable of posing any threat to him. Imran Farhat was a combination of success and failure while Shoaib Malik was a complete flop I hope the PCB selection committee members take some lessons from it. Cricket is a game in which the players must remain constantly in touch with the game. Unfortunately, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has the bad habit of discarding the players on one pretext or the other rendering them out of practice for the game. The selection committee must also realise that a successful team must be a practical combination of youth and experience and avoid stuffing the team with too many youngsters. Apart from the good result, the Zimbabwe’s tour has been a good experience for our team’s future endeavours especially the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, which commences in the UAE on October 18. Sri Lanka being one of the top teams of the world, we must select a strong combination and prepare them well for the tough fight.Coming to other cricket affairs, with the end of Zimbabwe’s tour coach Waqar Younis has said goodbye to cricket necessitating the appointment of a new coach. The PCB having received lot of nominations for the job both from home as well as abroad, a meeting is likely to be held soon to discuss the problem. I am glad the security problem has rendered the appointment of a foreign coach to a lower priority. Let us hope a highly competent Pakistan batsman is appointed on the all important job on which hinges the proficiency of players and success of the team. Claiming that 90 percent of the decisions taken by the PCB chairman were wrong, former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad acting as director general of the board fell out with the boss and left the matter to be decided by President Asif Zardari in his capacity as patron-in-chief of the PCB. Same was the position of Shahid Afridi who continued to harbour the ambition of still playing for Pakistan. Both of them attended a meeting called by the President in Karachi. According to press reports both the players were given ‘no lift’ by the President while Ijaz Butt’s versions were held supreme. This indicates a positive chance of Ijaz’s extension on the job after October 8, the day his tenure as chairman PCB ends. Another spell of bad luck, sorrow and gloom and conflicts and controversies for Pakistan’s cricket

Pakistan can get to the top of world rankings: Waqar

Waqar Younis, who quit as Pakistan cricket coach last week, says the squad he managed is highly capable of taking the country to the top of the world rankings.Lahore-based Pakistani cricketers and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials gave Waqar a farewell Friday night at the National Cricket Academy, hours before the former captain left for Sydney, reports the Express Tribune.Waqar, who had said the Zimbabwe tour would be his last, citing personal and health reasons for quitting, was with the team for a little over a year.'It's not like I won't be coming back to Pakistan as this is my own country,' said Waqar before departing from Lahore airport.'I am leaving for personal reasons, but once things improve, I will definitely give coming back a thought. In the meantime, it was a good experience with the PCB as well as the players. Coaching Pakistan was an experience altogether which went well.Waqar who decided to step down before his contract ended in December, is said to be suffering from a liver ailment for which his Sydney doctors have advised him long-term treatment under their direct supervision.Despite severe criticism by former captain Shahid Afridi, Waqar termed his tenure successful as he facilitated the creation of a team that is gelling well.'I am leaving the team as a unit and I hope they remain that way. They are capable of giving Sri Lanka a tough time. And with the spirit in the team that I have seen, I am optimistic of good results.'Former Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam praised Waqar for his services.'I have worked with him in various capacities and found him a true professional,' said Alam.'Apart from his wonderful cricketing career, he has now done an excellent job with the team as a coach and obviously his resignation is a setback to our plans.''His performance was outstanding,' said PCB chairman Ijaz Butt. 'I can understand the reasons for his wanting to leave and I hope he is able to resolve all his issues. He's welcome to come back and serve Pakistan cricket any time.

Swann backs Bopara to become a fine England all-rounder

England spinner Graeme Swann has backed Ravi Bopara to become a fine all-rounder.Bopara took four wickets for 10 runs against the West Indies and it were England's best bowling figures in a T20 international. England won by 10 wickets after Craig Kieswetter and Alex Hales led England to achieve the modest target of 125.'Bopara was unplayable. He has good control these days and is developing into a fine all-rounder,' Swann, England's stand-in Twenty20 captain, was quoted as saying by BBC.'He never looked like going for any runs out there - he was phenomenal.'Swann was delighted to get off to a winning start as a captain.'I enjoyed every moment of today,' said Swann. 'It was a dream start as captain. I asked the boys to give everything and they did that, I was delighted with the way everybody performed.' Bopara revealed that he was delighted but embarrassed at delivering record figures of 4-10.'It feels quite embarrassing that I have the best figures when you've got the incredible bowlers we have in our team,' he said.'But I'm very proud to be a part of this team. We've got a very tough series coming up in India, which will test us.'The way we've played this summer in England has been exceptional. To beat Sri Lanka and India - the two teams that contested the World Cup final - on our own turf is an unbelievable thing

Guernsey snatches victory from the jaws of defeat to win Pepsi ICC WCL Division 6

Jeremy Frith named Player of the Tournament Channel Island goes 33rd in the world rankings while runners-up Malaysia go 34th ; Both travel to Singapore in February for Pepsi ICC WCL Div. 5Kuwait beats Jersey in 3rd/4th play-off while Nigeria defeats Fiji in 5th/6th showdown Guernsey snatched victory from the jaws of defeat today to beat Malaysia and win Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 6 (WCL Div. 6) at Kinrara Oval in Kuala Lumpur. By virtue of reaching the final both teams have been promoted to WCL Div. 5 and will travel to Singapore in February.By winning the tournament, Guernsey has now climbed two places in the ICC Global Rankings to now occupy 33rd position while Malaysia occupy 34th place in the rankings. Guernsey did not lose a match throughout the entire week-long event held in Malaysia.Guernsey's Jeremy Frith earned his third Player of the Tournament award at the conclusion of the game while team-mate Tom Kimber was named Man of the Match. Frith previously won the honour in Pepsi ICC WCL Div. 7 in Guernsey and then again in Singapore after Pepsi ICC WCL Div. 6 both in 2009.Elsewhere, Kuwait defeated Jersey to win the third/fourth play-off while Nigeria claimed its only victory of the tournament when it beat Fiji the sides' fifth/sixth play-off at Bayeumas Oval.Under another sunny sky at Kinrara Oval, Malaysia took on Guernsey in the finals of Pepsi ICC WCL Div. 6 in Kuala Lumpur. The hosts winning the toss and electing to bat on home turf. The hosts took its time to score runs and had just reached the 50-mark when Guernsey all-rounder dismissed opener Faris Almas by re-arranging the 21-year-old's stumps in the process. Rakesh Madhavan and Ahmed Faiz did their best to steady things for the locals but captain Suhan Alagaratnam failed to put in a repeat performance from yesterday's game, the 25-year-old making just four runs before smashing the ball in the air to be caught at deep point.All-rounder Hammad Ullah Khan decided to step up to the plate, scoring 53 before being stumped off the bowling of GH Smit, the latter having a good day with the ball taking three wickets. Malaysia took its time to score runs in front of an enthusiastic bunch of supporters and by the time its 50 overs was completed had managed to just clear the 200 mark.As the clouds rolled in and fear of rain began to surface, Guernsey took to the field and made an abysmal start to proceeding with both Smit and Adam Martel departing for ducks, leaving the side reeling two down going into the third over. The arrival of stalwart Frith alongside Tim Ravenscroft should have steadied the innings but Almas had other plans and proceeded to run out the latter for 21 much to the delight of the home support. The top order proved to be disappointing in the afternoon heat, Frith departing not long after Ravenscroft and the side were soon five down with just 40 runs on the board and not even in the 10th over.Malaysia's trio of bowlers kept the opposition under pressure, Hassan Ghulam, Khan and Aminuddin Ramply continued to terrorise Guernsey's batting line-up while the side's quick actions in the field proved tough for the Channel Island side. The side promptly slumped to 65-7 before the 20th over had even begun

But all was not lose for Guernsey, a fight back from Tom Kimber and David Hooper saw the side push on the hosts with Hooper contributing some 45 runs before he was run-out while Kimber valiantly continued the side's push for victory alongside the side's tail-enders. Kimber's starred with the bat for the men in green to snatch victory for the side when he smashed his way to an un-beaten 82 off 92 balls in a patient innings by the 21-year-old right-handed batsman. He guided the side to victory with three balls to spare and clinch an ecstatic Guernsey team the title of Pepsi ICC WCL Division 6 Champions.Le Prevost said: "It feels simply brilliant to win today and to have been six or seven down and then see young Tom Kimber come out and guide us to victory with a fantastic knock of 82 not out."We've had two extremely tough games of cricket against Malaysia and it's been a fantastic week to have won every game and walk away as champions. I'm extremely proud of how the team has performed as a whole and I hope we can keep that momentum going for Division 5 in Singapore."Player of the Tournament, Frith commented: "It's obviously great to win another player of the tournament award but this week was very much a group effort and it is great to have won every game along the way and then to come out the end as champions too. I work with development of cricket in Guernsey and to see the likes of Tom Kimber, Jamie Nussbaumer, Tim Ravenscroft and David Hooper along with Ben Ferbrache come through this tournament and perform so well is pleasing."Malaysia captain, Suhan said: " It's been a great week of cricket in Malaysia and it's obviously disappointing to have lost the final but Guernsey played some great cricket and Tom Kimber should be congratulated for great knock "We need to work on our batting ahead of going to Singapore in February and we'll take each game as it comes but I'd definitely like a chance to beat Guernsey next year in Division 5."Meanwhile, in the third/fourth play-offs at Selangor Turf Club - Jersey had Kuwait steadily on the back-foot with two of the top order departing for just two runs each while captain Hisham Mizra's disappointing tournament continued when he retired hurt after scoring just eight runs. The lower order then proved to be the run-makers of the innings, with Muhammed Amin, Saad Qamar and Azmatullah all contributing substantially to the Kuwaitis final total, Saad adding 50 to the 212 that the side managed to make. Jersey's Anthony Hawkins-Kay once again proved to be the most successful the Channel Island's bowlers claiming three wickets. In reply, Jersey fell just eight runs short of the total, to miss out on third place position in the event despite some valiant batting once again from Corey Bisson and Peter Gough. The duo actually concluded the tournament as the third and fourth highest run-getters overall, just behind team-mate Dean Morrison and Guernsey's Frith.Kuwait Mohammed Naseer proved to be the man on target today claiming four wickets taking his total wicket-haul for the tournament to nine by the conclusion of today's game. By beating Jersey, Kuwait are now 35th in the world with the Jersey side one place beneath them.In the final play-off, for fifth/sixth position between Fiji and Nigeria, the Nigerian side posted a respectable total of 235 in its 50 overs with Ramit Gill and Sean Philips proving to be the stand-out batsman. Meanwhile Mohammad Khan and Tasheed Tawheed of Fiji picked up a trio of wickets each at the venue that was used for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 2008.In reply, Fiji managed just 133 runs despite a valiant effort by Josefa Dabea who made 46 not out for the side but the day belonged to Varun Behani who claimed three wickets for 30 runs and alongside the Nigerian bowling attacked secured the side its first and only victory of the tournament.

National T20 Championship begins today

KARACHI : Karachi Dolphins hope to get sixth time lucky as they begin as hot favourites for the title at the Faysal bank T20 Championship which explodes into action here at the National Stadium from Sunday. The Dolphins have played and lost five domestic T20 finals and have never annexed the title but the heartening fact for their fans is that their team is one of the most balanced outfits in the tournament and has a solid chance of finally winning the crown.Led by the charismatic Shahid Afridi, the star-studded Dolphins have received a pre-tournament boost as they will now be playing on home turf after the event was recently moved here from Lahore because of a dengue outbreak in the Punjab. They have been placed in a rather easy group 'D' with Peshawar Panthers and Islamabad Leopards. One expects them to have an easy sailing at least till the knock-out stage Their main rivals are Sialkot Stallions and Lahore Lions but Dolphins' good luck is that the two of their biggest rivals are in the same group, which means that one of the big two will not be able to go beyond group stages. But perhaps more importantly, it will be the support of home crowd and the advantage of playing in their own backyard that can help them to finally reign supreme in the event.Meanwhile, the tournament can be lit up by the unknown Afghan Cheetas, who are taking part in the event for first time in history.Though, they are not bringing some of their main players to the event but history beckons that the Afghans can prove to be tough nut to crack in shortest format of the game. They have been placed with current champions Rawalpindi Rams, former winners Faislabad Wolves and a dangerous Multan Tigers' outfit in Group 'B', in what certainly seems to be a 'group of death'. But Cheetas' can turn out to be the surprise package of the event.Test leg-spinner Danish Kaneria will be leading Karachi Zebras in the tournament and they will play the last match on Sunday against bitter rivals Lahore Eagles. The crowd can expect to see some fireworks when these two take on each under floodlights. The other teams to join them in Group 'A' are lowly Abbottabad Falcons and Quetta Bear.Meanwhile, five-time champions Sialkot stallions, the most successful side of Pakistan's T20 history, have been drawn with Lahore Lions and Hyderabad Hawks.Hawks can prove to be a nightmare for these two giants, as they have become a strong team in recent times and can cause a few upsets.Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali is expected to be the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the tournament today.Today's matches: Abbottabad Falcons vs Quetta Bears (12pm), Lahore Lions vs Hyderabad Hawks (4pm) and Karachi Zebras vs Lahore Eagles (8pm).

Akram said Shoaib, who was a controversial figure all through his playing career, was just trying to sell his book with tall claims and also rejected allegations that he tried to destroy the pacer's career. England crush hapless Windies by 10 wickets

LONDON : Ravi Bopara produced England's best ever Twenty20 bowling performance to set up a crushing 10-wicket win over the West Indies in the first game of a two-match series at the Oval on Friday. The Essex all-rounder took 4-10 with his medium pace, eclipsing the previous best mark of 4-22 jointly held by Paul Collingwood and Jade Dernbach, as the tourists slipped from 52-0 to 125 all out. World champions England then cruised to victory, with 28 balls to spare, Alex Hales making 62 not out and Craig Kieswetter unbeaten on 58.England captain Graeme Swann claimed several of his players have made a case for inclusion in the squad for next year's Twenty20 World Cup in Sri Lanka."We can take a lot of credit for the way we approached this game. We are trying to take these two games very seriously with the World Cup coming up and this has a gone a long way to confirming one or two players into that squad if not into the final 11, he said. The West Indies got off to a flying start but the introduction of the slower bowlers -- Samit Patel (2-23), Swann (1-30) and Bopara -- stalled the run rate and a rash of wickets saw the tourists collapse from 97-2 to a below par total. But their captain Darren Sammy did not seem to heed the lessons of his side's innings and didn't introduce his slower bowlers until the eighth over.By then England were 66 without loss and had the game under control. Hales, who made a second ball duck in his only previous international against India, passed 50 from 36 balls and Kieswetter did the same shortly afterwards taking 41 deliveries and England passed 100 in the 12th over on their way to a convincing win.It had seemed a different story when West Indies had been put in by Swann. They raced past 50 in 35 balls with Dwayne Smith helping himself to 20 off one over from Tim Bresnan before the spinners arrived and put the brakes on the scoring rate. With one over of the batting powerplay left Swann opted to give Patel a bowl, rather than having an over himself, and was rewarded with the wicket of Smith who was bowled for 33 by a ball that turned past his outside edge and hit off stump.Johnson Charles made 33 and Danza Hyatt 26, but the rest of the West Indies batsmen failed to make double figures.

Pakistan shocked at Tiger Pataudi's death

KARACHI : Pakistanis on Friday paid tribute to former Indian captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, saying the death of the charismatic player left a void in the cricket world.Pataudi, nicknamed "The Tiger" for his superb fielding, who died Thursday aged 70, was equally popular across the border for his grace and charismatic character. He played 46 Tests between 1961 and 1975, scoring 2,793 runs at an average of 34.91 with six centuries despite losing his right eye in a car accident in England.Former Pakistan captain and a contemporary of Pataudi, Hanif Mohammad said the news came as a shock."I recently watched him on television and he looked great, but the sudden news of his death is a shock to me," said Mohammad, nicknamed "Little Master" for his batting in 1950s and 60s.Mohammad said he didn't play against Pataudi as India-Pakistan ties were stalled during that period but they were team-mates in a World XI."When Pataudi started his career, we didn't have Indo-Pak ties but we got a chance to play in a World XI and I found him a great human being, a charismatic character and a genuine cricket buff," Mohammad reminisced.Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan, a cousin of Pataudi, said his death was a great loss for the game.Pataudi was a great ambassador of Indian cricket and was a very genuine cricket lover, his death will leave a great void for the family and for the cricket world," said Khan.Pataudi became India's youngest captain at the age of 21 during a tour of the West Indies in 1962 when the then skipper Nari Contractor was injured after being hit on the head by a bouncer from Charlie Griffith. He led India in 40 of his 46 Tests, winning nine and securing the country's first series win abroad on the 1967-68 tour of New Zealand.Former PCB chief executive Arif Abbasi remembered Pataudi as a "great friend.""I have lost a great and a very close friend," said Abbasi. "He had a great vision of the game and his demise is not only a great loss for Indian cricket but also for international cricket as well.Pataudi is survived by his actress wife Sharmila Tagore, whom he married in 1969, two daughters and a son, Saif Ali Khan, who is a popular Bollywood actor.

Tendulkar refuses to comment on Shoaib’s autobiography

MUMBAI : Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar has refused to comment on statements made about him in Shoaib Akhtar’s new autobiography,Akhtar in his autobiography said that Tendulkar was intimidated by him and he was not a match winning player. Akhtar while speaking to an Indian news channel in Mumbai said that he had no personal problem with Tendulkar who had contributed immensely to cricket.

Australia’s Marsh appointed Sri Lanka coach

COLOMBO : Former Australian opener Geoff Marsh will take over as head coach of the Sri Lankan team on a two-year contract, the country's cricket board (SLC) said on Friday. "With his vast coaching and playing experience at the highest levels, Sri Lanka Cricket is confident that he would be an ideal choice for the post of Sri Lanka national team headcoach," the board said in a statement. Jersey stumbles to beat Nigeria

Jersey stumbled to victory over Nigeria today in Kuala Lumpur in Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 6 (WCL Div. 6). The fixture was a re-play of the round three game that the sides had been forced to abandon on Tuesday due to adverse weather conditions. The toss for the game took place on schedule, with Jersey choosing to field, but as soon as captain Peter Gough had made his decision the weather took a turn for the worse and the rain clouds blew in, leading to a delayed start and the match being reduced to 40 overs Endurance Ofem's men have not been performing well with the bat this tournament and the side needed a good start and a decent total on the board but Jersey's bowling attack had other ambitions.James Faudemer, Anthony Hawkins-Kay and Ben Stevens proved to once again be the men to deliver for Jersey. Faudemer's slow left-arm spin was the downfall of the Nigerians today, the 20-year-old claiming four wickets, including those of key top order batsmen Varun Behani, Oluwaseun Odeku and player-coach Sean Philips.Hawkins-Kay showed his speed once again this time to dismiss opener Ademola Onikoyi for just two runs and in-form batsman Olejide Bejide, the latter departing for a duck.It was an unfortunate innings for the African side who managed just 110 in 32 overs but all was not lost for the side as a quick turnaround saw Nigeria back on the field ahead of the lunch break and claiming three wickets before food was served.Jersey captain Gough was promoted to opening the batting alongside Ed Farley, the latter departing for a duck after facing just three balls. Gough managed just six runs before he was dismissed by Joshua Ogunlola, the medium-pacer tempting the 26-year-old to edging the ball to Nigeria wicketkeeper Onikoyi. Saheed Akolade then dismissed Ben Stevens, clean bowling the 19-year-old and four overs later Akolade sent Ben Silva packing after the 33-year-old was caught by some nifty fielding from Ramit Gill.It was then up to Dean Morrison and Corey Bisson to steady the ship for the Channel Island side but not for long as Bisson departed after being caught by Behani off the bowling of off-break bowler Olakejan Awolowo.Things went from bad to worse for the side as two batsman departed in quick succession both to Philips and it then became the task of Morrison to lead the side, along with Alex Cooke to its second win of the tournament.Morrison finished with 59 not out and was happy to see another win on the baord: "I normally open the batting but today Peter Gough opened instead as I came in at number six today. We lost early wickets, including two before the break which wasn't great and it was up to me and Corey Bisson to steady the ship and we put on a 52 run partnership before he departed."It was then about batting through to make sure we reached the target, even if it was with only an over or so to spare," said Morrison. "Like I said, I normally open, but back when I played in Australia I used to come in down the order so when I came in today at six I knew what I had to do which was that to help the tail bat through. We had to keep trying for the win and I kept saying to the guys that came in to join me it was all about keeping going and getting victory."It's definitely taken the heat off us to have another win, although we can't be complacent we have to win tomorrow to keep ourselves in with a chance in this tournament," added Morrison. He did admit Nigeria did challenge the side: "I think early on we bowled too many wides to Nigeria, we shouldn't have let them get more than 80 or 90 but I have to say since we last played them, in our rained-off game, their bowling attack has improved. They made our batsmen commit to shots but putting the ball it the right areas and it paid off for them in the first innings, they are a very competitive side.Tomorrow's fixtures will see Malaysia plays Guernsey at Kinrara Oval, Jersey takes on Fiji at Selgangor Turf Club while Nigeria faces up to Kuwait at Bayeumas Oval.Score in brief for Round 3 re-playAt Bayeumas (Match reduced to 40 overs due to rain-delayed start)Nigeria 110 all out, 32 overs (Behani 25; Faudemer 4-25, Hawkins-Kay 3-27, Stevens 3-12)Jersey 111-7, 38.4 overs (Morrison 59 not out; Akolade 3-22)

Australia captain wants say on new coach

SYDNEY : Australian Test captain Michael Clarke has said he wants a say on who the new team coach will be but stopped short of nominating a candidate, as Steve Rixon emerged as a frontrunner. The team is looking for a new mentor after Tim Nielsen decided to step down rather than reapply for his job after the team secured a 1-0 Test series win over Sri Lanka in Colombo this week.Nielsen, 43, who held the job for four years, would have had to reapply for the expanded role of head coach, a post which is being created following recommendations made by the seven-month Argus Review of Australian cricket. With a tour of South Africa looming in less than a month, there is an urgent need to appoint at least an interim replacement.Reports said former New Zealand coach Rixon and former Australian Test batsman Justin Langer were in the running, at least for the interim position.Clarke emphasised the need for him to have a strong bond with the new coach."There's a lot of successful coaches around the world, and I think the priority, as the review has made very clear, is they are going to try and get the best person for the job," he said late Wednesday, on arriving back in Australia.I think Tim Nielsen has done an amazing job for Australia. He's been fantastic for me, not only as a captain, but as a player and he's certainly going to be missed. "But in regards to names I'm not going to get involved in that because to me it's irrelevant."Asked if he hoped to have some input into the decision, Clarke said: "I hope I will. I have a really good relationship with James Sutherland the (Cricket Australia) CEO and I'm pretty sure it is important the captain and coach have a strong bond."I would imagine I would have some sort of impact and I'll be communicating with James over however long, to try and work out who they think the best person for the role is."During Nielsen's tenure, Australia lost two Ashes series against England and failed to retain the limited-overs World Cup in April after winning it on the last three occasions Australian cricket is undergoing a transitional period following the retirement of greats like Shane Warne, Mathew Hayden, Glenn McGrath and Adam Gilchrist. The sweeping Argus Review was ordered by the Australian cricket board after the Test team's humiliating 3-1 Ashes series defeat at home to England this year. The announcement came after Clarke replaced Ricky Ponting as captain and led Australia to Test and one-day series wins in Sri Lanka on his first full tour at the helm.

Aussies win series after 3rd Test drawn against Sri Lanka

COLOMBO : Australia clinched the Test series against Sri Lanka 1-0 Tuesday after resurgent skipper Michael Clarke led from the front to snatch a draw for the tourists in the finely poised third and final game. For Clarke it was a victorious first Test tour as captain, the series win coming after the 125-run defeat of the hosts in the opening encounter in Galle. The second Test in Pallekele ended in a rain-affected draw.Clarke said he was delighted at his team's performance after receiving the series trophy named after spin legends Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan. The skipper burst into form with a fluent century and Michael Hussey narrowly missed a third consecutive hundred as Australia piled up 488 in their second innings before they were all out shortly before close with a lead of 331.Sri Lanka were 7-0 from two overs in their second knock when the match was called off at the Sinhalese Sports Club in the capital Colombo.Clarke, who replaced Ricky Ponting as captain, hit 112 and Hussey made 93 in a remarkable batting revival after the tourists had conceded a first innings lead of 157 runs in good batting conditions.Clarke, who went 23 innings without a Test century since making 168 against New Zealand in March last year, hammered 14 boundaries and three sixes in his robust knock. He was dismissed after he lost concentration following a verbal on-field skirmish with Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara and holed out in the deep to become left-arm spinner Rangana Herath's fifth victim.Herath finished with remarkable figures of 7-157 on an unhelpful pitch, his last wicket giving him 100 Test scalps in 29 matches.Hussey continued his amazing run in the series, scoring 463 runs in five innings at an average of 92.60, but missed out on a century in each innings of this match The left-hander moved to 93 with two fours off Tillakaratne Dilshan, but fell in the same over as he swept high to a diving Chanaka Welegedara at deep square-leg.The West Australian had scored 95 and 15 in the first Test, 142 in the second and 118 in the first innings here.Hussey, who picked up the man-of-the-match awards in all three Tests, was also adjudged the man of the series. He and Clarke put on 176 for the fifth wicket after Sri Lanka had struck an important blow in the day's sixth over.Australia added just 11 runs to their overnight score of 209-3 when century-maker Phil Hughes top-edged a sweep off Herath to Lahiru Thirimanne at square-leg.The left-hander made 126, his third Test century.Sri Lanka will now prepare for Test and one-day contests against Pakistan to be played in the United Arab Emirates from next month.

Sri Lanka hope to level series despite Hughes ton

COLOMBO : Sri Lanka kept their hopes alive of securing a series-levelling win over Australia in the final Test in Colombo on Monday, despite an unbeaten century from opener Phil Hughes.Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath grabbed all three wickets as the tourists, trailing by 157 runs on the first innings, ended the fourth day's play at 209-3 in their second knock at the Sinhalese Sports Club.Hughes was unbeaten on 122 and skipper Michael Clarke was on eight, with Australia going into the final day on Tuesday 52 runs ahead with seven wickets in hand.Clarke's men will need to bat out at least two of the last three sessions to draw the match and clinch the series 1-0 on the back of a 125-run win in the first Test in Galle. The rain-hit second match in Pallekele was drawn.Hughes had walked to the crease in danger of losing his spot in the team after failing to score a half-century in 11 innings since an unbeaten 86 against New Zealand in March last year. The left-hander, who had an umpire's review for a catch at the wicket go in his favour off the last ball of the day, responded with an aggressive knock that contained 16 boundaries and a six.Hughes had also survived a review for leg-before on 99 before cutting seamer Chanaka Welegedara for two runs later in the same over to bring up his third Test century.Hughes celebrated the landmark by raising his fist towards the travelling Australian media in the press box before he acknowledged the cheers from his team-mates and the crowd.Hughes contributed 36 in an opening stand of 62 with Shane Watson, who fell leg-before to Herath for 21 when a TV review overturned umpire Tony Hill's decision to reprieve the batsman.Shaun Marsh added 60 for the second wicket with Hughes when he was given out by Hill, caught at short-leg off Herath, even though replays showed the ball made no contact with the bat.Marsh, surprisingly, did not ask for a review.Hughes then put on 66 for the third wicket with Ricky Ponting, before the former captain edged a vicious turner from Herath to the slips after making 28.Earlier, Sri Lanka gained a sizeable lead through a maiden Test century from vice-captain Angelo Mathews.Mathews returned unbeaten on 105 as the hosts added 45 runs to their overnight score of 428-6 before they were all out for 473 shortly before lunch on the fourth day.Fast bowler Peter Siddle claimed two of the last four Sri Lankan wickets to finish with 4-91 from 35 overs. Trent Copeland and Mitchell Johnson picked up two wickets each.Siddle bowled Shaminda Eranga for 12 and trapped Herath leg-before for three within the first hour.Mathews was stranded on 95 when Sri Lanka lost their ninth wicket, but the right-hander reached the coveted century by driving Siddle to the cover fence for his 10th boundary. The 24-year-old has been one of Sri Lanka's few batting stars in the series, having made 95 in the first Test and 58 in the drawn second game.Last man Suranga Lakmal contributed 13 in a 10th-wicket stand of 23 with Mathews before he was bowled by Johnson.

Mathews' ton gets S Lanka 157-run lead over Aussies

COLOMBO : Angelo Mathews scored his maiden test hundred to give Sri Lanka a handy first-innings lead of 157 against Australia on the fourth day of the third and final Test on Monday. Mathews, unbeaten on 85 overnight, was stuck nervously in the nineties as he lost three partners in quick succession but finally got across the elusive 100-mark with a cover-driven four off Peter Siddle. Mathews, on 95 when the ninth wicket fell, would have tothank last man Suranga Lakmal for hanging around for 37 minutes to help him get to his century. The 24-year old all-rounder, who had twice been dismissed in the nineties in his 16-Test career, jumped into the air to celebrate his century and was warmly applauded by his team mates in the dressing room. Australia made early inroads into the Sri Lankan batting on Monday when Siddle breached the defence of debutant Saminda Eranga (12) and trapped Rangana Herath (3) leg before. Chanaka Welegedara (1) was run out after a misunderstanding with Mathews that saw both batsmen stuck at the non-strikers end. Siddle, who replaced the injured Ryan Harris for the final Test, was Australia's best bowler, finishing with four wickets for 91. Australian were 16-0 in their second innings, with Shane Watson and Phil Hughes at the crease at lunch. Australia lead the three-Test series 1-0.

World wants to see Indo-Pak play: Saqlain

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan spin legend Saqlain Mushtaq, believes that the rival of Indo-Pak cricket series will be great as the entire world wants to see India and Pakistan play for the sheer passion the players show. There are talks that Indo-Pak cricket could be revived with India hosting a series in February-March 2012.“I personally feel that India and Pakistan should start a series on the lines of Ashes. But lets wait for the ties to resume first," Mushtaq said. Talking about Indian team's performance on the England tour, Mushtaq said, 'It was the failure of the team and you cannot just blame the spinners. You didn't have runs on the board and, in such scenario, the spinners can’t gamble".“The conditions were pacer-friendly and, as one saw, it was the pacers who did the trick for the hosts. So I don't think it would be right to blame the spinners alone,Mushtaq said that he thinks India's performance in England was an overall failure and no specific department should be blamed. "The injuries made things worse for India as they could not field a full-strength. I am sure that if India did not have injury problems, the outcome would have been different. In fact, I am sure that things will be different when England visits India next month. India should have all their players fit and the conditions will also favour them," he said.

Sri Lanka take charge against Aussies

COLOMBO : Skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan inspired Sri Lanka's tenacious batting display as the hosts took charge of the third cricket Test against Australia in Colombo on Sunday.Sri Lanka, seeking a series-levelling win, closed the third day's play at the Sinhalese Sports Club on 428-6 in their first innings, a lead of 112 runs over Australia's 316 with four wickets in hand.Dilshan struck a rousing 83, Kumar Sangakkara made 79 in his 100th Test appearance, Mahela Jayawardene hit 51 and Angelo Mathews returned unbeaten on 85 as Sri Lanka led Australia for the first time in the series.Prasanna Jayawardene chipped in with 47, sharing a sixth-wicket stand of 81 with Mathews that increased Australia's frustration in the field on a hot, humid day.Dilshan, who had contributed just 56 runs in the previous four innings of the series, hammered 14 boundaries before he was caught behind off Trent Copeland just before tea.Dilshan put on a valuable 121 for the fifth wicket with Mathews on either side of lunch after Australia had threatened to take charge in the morning session.Australian fast bowler Peter Siddle, who battled bravely in trying conditions to finish the day with 2-76 from 27 overs, said his team faced a tough task over the next two days. The tourists grabbed the crucial wickets of Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene in the space of 12 runs after Sri Lanka resumed at the overnight score of 166-2.The pair, who compiled Test cricket's highest partnership of 624 at the same venue in 2006 against South Africa, put on 101 for the third wicket. The two former Sri Lankan captains appeared to have settled in for the long haul when Australia earned a lucky break.Jayawardene batted aggressively in the morning session to hit four boundaries but chased a wide ball from Shane Watson and edged a catch to wicket-keeper Brad Haddin.Jayawardene, who has hit 10 Test hundreds at the SSC, managed only a half-century this time.Australia claimed the second new ball after 81 overs and met with immediate success when Siddle dismissed a well-set Sangakkara with the fourth delivery.Sangakkara smashed the first ball to the cover fence, but edged a rising ball later in the same over to Haddin.Dilshan, an opening batsman who demoted himself to number five for this match, had a harrowing start to his innings. He left the first delivery from Watson, which dipped in dangerously close to the off-stump and had yet to get off the mark when a miscued shot off Watson fell just short of a diving Shaun Marsh at mid-on.Dilshan opened his account with a flick off Mitchell Johnson for a boundary, which also brought up Sri Lanka's 200 and then joined hands with Mathews to flay the Australian attack on a good wicket.Mathews reached his third half-century in the series with two boundaries in one Siddle over after resumption.Australia are ahead 1-0 in the series, having won the first Test in Galle by 125 runs

Kuwait defeat Jersey in final-over thriller

Kuwait defeated Jersey in a final-over thriller to complete an exciting game today (Monday) at Pepsi ICC World Cricket League (WCL Div. 6) in Kuala Lumpur. The two sides faced-off today after rain forced its fixture to be abandoned yesterday. The teams headed to Kinrara Oval for a 1030 start but heavy rainfall saw the game delayed but the clouds cleared in time for a reduced-overs fixture, 39 to be precise, which began at 1345 local time. The top order did not have a great start to the day with Jersey three down by the 15th over, Abdullah Akhunzada, Saad Khalid and Mohammed Naseer sharing the spoils. It was then up to captain Peter Gough alongside Corey Bisson to stabilize the Jersey innings which the duo did, both scoring half-centuries.Bisson departed on 54, after a call to run from Gough saw the 19-year-old not quite have the pace to make it to his crease in time and he was run out by Kuwaiti wicketkeeper Sharjeel Tahir. Gough anchored the team's innings until the 33rd over when he was caught by Mohammad Amin, while the rest of the Jersey side failed to sparkle with the bat. In contrast, Kuwait's fast bowler Saad and legbreak bowler Akhunzada both had good games take three wickets each to leave the side chasing 157 in its 39 overs. After a short break, Kuwait made light work of knocking of the runs in the afternoon sunshine at Kinrara Oval, Irfan Bhatti and Aamir Javed contributing 55 runs to the target before Bhatti was dismissed bowled by Ben Stevens on the last ball of the 10th over. Some good catching in the field saw Aamir and Saad Qamar dismissed off the bowling of James Faudemer, as things began to look bad for the Kuwaitis who slipped to 128-6 in the 28th over losing key middle-order batsmen Saad Khalid, Hisham Mirza and Sibtain Raza for just 34 runs. With 4.2 overs to go, and 20 runs to get, it was up to Naseer and Amin to try and steer the side home but Naseer departed after being clean bowled by Charles Perchard. The task of winning the game then fell to Amin and Akhunzada but Stevens had other ideas and the very next over clean bowled the former, setting up a thrilling final three overs.Akhunzada was promptly caught at short mid-wicket by Ben Silva off the bowling of Stevens, who was cleaning up the tail with aplomb, leaving Sharjeel Tahir and Azmatullah Nazeer to attempt to win the game for the Division 7 winners. Azmatullah smashed a huge six to bring the target down to six runs off nine balls, adding to that a couple of quick singles and the duo needed to strike four runs off the last over to give Kuwait victory. Despite Jersey's bowlers best efforts Azmatullah and Sharjeel had an alternative plan and needing just four off the last over the duo needed just three balls to seal the deal for the team and leaving Gough's Jersey to ponder another defeat."I thought we performed superbly in the field today and Ben Stevens did really well to work his way through the Kuwait batting line-up. Corey Bisson and myself did well batting today, but I know we have the strength in our top order in Sam de la Haye, Dean Morrison and Ben that we will bounce back as a batting unit and perform better tomorrow."We really pushed Kuwait and we just need another good day to get ourselves our first win, both of these first two matches have been tight and we've shown we've got the skills we just need to finish these games off with victory now," said the Jersey captain Gough.Kuwait coach Basil Jayawardene added: "I think as a team we're still getting used to the conditions here in Malaysia and we needed some time to bed into the tournament. Jersey definitely tested us as a side today but we managed to finish the game and seal the win with three balls to spare."Scores in brief after Round 2At Kinrara (39-over fixture) Jersey 156-8, 39 overs (Bisson 54, Gough 52; Akhunzada 3-22, Saad 3-31)Kuwait 157-9, 33.3 overs (Amir 42; Stevens 3-10, Faudemer 2-17) Kuwait won by one wicket
