ICC ruling to end presidential appointment of PCB chairman

KARACHI: Pakistan cricket will not challenge the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) directive to member boards to free themselves from government interference within two years. The ICC annual conference upheld a constitutional amendment last week to provide for the principle of free elections and the independence of member boards. In Pakistan, the president is the chief patron of the board (PCB) and directly appoints the chairman.“We have no intention of challenging the ICC ruling as it was approved by the general council in Hong Kong last week,” PCB Chief Operating Officer Subhan Ahmad told Reuters. The PCB would soon meet with government officials to inform them about the ICC ruling.“Once our chairman, Ijaz Butt, returns home later this month he will brief the chief patron on the changed scenario,” Ahmad added. The ICC has given members a maximum of two years to reorganise their boards or face sanctions.Ahmad said that after consulting legal advisors and meeting government official the PCB would start working on making the necessary amendments in its constitution to bring it in line with ICC requirements.“It will take a few months but we also want to ensure this  process is completed without a hitch,” he added.Last month, PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt called for an end to political interference in the board’s row with former captain Shahid Afridi, saying it was damaging the sport.

Court summons PCB on Kaneria case

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday summoned cricket authorities to explain why they have not cleared leg-spinner Danish Kaneria to play after he was released without charge in a spot-fixing case.Kaneria and fellow Essex bowler Mervyn Westfield were arrested last year on charges of spot-fixing during a Pro40 match against Durham in 2009. Kaneria was later released without being charged but Westfield faces criminal proceedings.Kaneria featured in Pakistan's Test series against England last year but has not been
selected since for international matches because he has not been formally cleared by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).His lawyer Farogh Naseem told that the PCB has been summoned to appear in court on July 26, after the 30-year-old went to court last week in a bid to revive his international career."I have given every document to the PCB but they are not clearing me. I have committed no crime and that's why Essex police and my county have cleared me in that spot-fixing case," Kaneria had told."My priority is to play for Pakistan but I don't know for what crime I am being punished by the PCB. Every time they announce a squad and every time they give contracts to players, they say Kaneria is not cleared."The wily leg-spinner has taken 261 wickets in 61 Tests, besides taking 15 in 18 one-day internationals. The PCB was forced to form an integrity committee by the International Cricket Council after a separate spot-fixing case in England last year ended in lengthy bans for Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer.

Cook’s ton helps England reach 246-7 against SL

LONDON: England captain Alastair Cook's career-best century kept Sri Lanka at bay in the third one-day international (ODI) at Lord's here on Sunday. But with no other England batsman making more than Kevin Pietersen's 41, the hosts were still held to 246 for seven.England's total would have been considerably worse had not Cook been reprieved on 15 when Mahela Jayawardene dropped a regulation slip catch As it was Cook, also dropped by Thilina Kandamby at third man on 103, went on to make 119. He shared stands of 72, with Ian Bell (30), and 75, with Tim Bresnan (26) for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively after England had collapsed to 85 for four.Cook was on course to become only the second batsman, after fellow England left-handed opener Nick Knight, to bat through a full 50-over ODI innings when he was run out attempting a bye by Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara. In all he faced 143 balls with 13 fours -- not the most rapid run-rate but hugely valuable in the context of the match. This was only Cook's second century in 29 ODI innings and his highest, surpassing the 102 made against India at Southampton in 2007.The 26-year-old who in Sri Lanka's 69-run series levelling win at Headingley on Friday won the toss and fielded because England would "quite fancy chasing" only to see the tourists pile up 309, opted to bat first at Lord's.Cook, belying his reputation as a slow scorer, forced Angelo Mathews off the backfoot for four in the first over.It was the only over Mathews, struggling with a knee injury, bowled.Cook should have been out when he edged Nuwan Kulasekara only for the normally reliable Jayawardene to drop the two-handed chance. Pietersen, looking in excellent touch, dominated a third wicket stand of 49, of which Cook's share was just seven, before leg-spinner Jeevan Mendis checked England's recovery with two wickets. First he induced Pietersen, who faced just 43 balls, to sky a sweep to deep square leg where Suraj Randiv held a well-judged catch and Mendis then had left-hander Eoin Morgan lbw for four.

3rd ODI: England win toss, bat against Sri Lanka

LONDON: England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to bat against Sri Lanka in the third one-day international at Lord's here on Sunday. Both sides were unchanged from the second one-day international at Headingley on Friday which Sri Lanka won by 69 runs to level the five-match series at 1-1 after Cook won the toss and fielded. Teams England: Craig Kieswetter (wk), Alastair Cook (captain), Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan, Ian Bell, Tim Bresnan, Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Jade DernbachSri Lanka: Tillakaratne Dilshan (captain), Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Thilina Kandamby, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Jeevan Mendis, Nuwan Kulasekera, Suranga Lakmal, Suraj Randiv, Lasith MalingaUmpires: Billy Bowden (NZ) and Nigel Llong (ENG), Third umpire: Richard Illingworth (ENG)

Bravo overshadows Sharma to earn West Indies draw

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Another incisive spell from Ishant Sharma was upstaged by resilient West Indies batting led by Darren Bravo as India had to settle for a draw in the second Test on Saturday.Man-of-the-match Sharma captured four for 53, finishing with match figures of 10 for 98, as the West Indies, chasing 281 for victory, ended on 202 for seven in their second innings when bad light stopped play.India's hopes of a historic series-clinching victory were almost derailed as Darren Bravo, whose 73 was the top score, and Carlton Baugh Jr, not out on 46, added 69 for the seventh wicket. But rain, which had dogged the Test over the first four days, returned to ruin an exciting finish just when it appeared that India were on the back foot. The result meant that India held on to a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, after they won the first Test by 63 runs at Sabina Park in Jamaica. The rain came at the right moment for India and interrupted the West Indies' flow, stopping play for half an hour with the hosts needing 102 from the final 18.3 overs, after Baugh and Bravo started to blossom.Sharma had Bravo caught behind, his 174-ball innings containing eight boundaries, and then added to Sammy's batting woes when he trapped him lbw for a duck in his final over. After Sharma's next delivery to Ravi Rampaul, umpires Asad Rauf of Pakistan and Ian Gould of England ushered the players off the field.India will now look to clinch the series when the final Test opens on Wednesday at Windsor Park in Dominica.Their bid for victory had hit a snag before tea, when Bravo and fellow left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul navigated West Indies to 108 for three.India had the hosts wobbling on 55 for three, but Bravo and Chanderpaul put on 54 for the fourth wicket either side of the break to stem the fall of wickets.Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh moved to within two scalps of 400 Test wickets when he dubiously trapped Chanderpaul lbw for 12 shortly after tea.Ball-tracking TV replays suggested that the batsman might have been very unfortunate.India continued to hunt for victory, but Baugh came to the crease and batted sensibly, seeming to turn the tide in the West Indies' favour before the rain stopped him and Bravo in their tracks. Before lunch, Sharma and Praveen Kumar left West Indies shaky on 51 for two.Sharma made the breakthrough when he had opener Lendl Simmons caught at first slip for 14, edging a loose drive, and Kumar had Ramnaresh Sarwan caught at second slip for eight, top-edging a cut, leaving West Indies 27 for two. After lunch, Sharma removed opener Adrian Barath in the first 10 minutes, caught at third slip for 27, but West Indies showed some fight with the bat for the first time.Earlier, V.V.S. Laxman had been dismissed for 87  following on from his 85 in the first innings as India moved to 269 for six in their second innings before declaring just over an hour into the morning.

Laxman, Dravid put India in charge of second Test

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Half-centuries from V.V.S. Laxman and Rahul Dravid put India in a formidable position in the rain-hit second Test against West Indies on Friday.Laxman was unbeaten on 72 - his second half-century in the match - and Dravid was dismissed for 55, as the Indians reached 229 for three in their second innings for an overall lead of 240 on the rain-affected fourth day.Laxman and Dravid, the visitors' most decorated batsman, featured in three half-century stands that fortified the World No.1 Test team's position.Dravid added 63 for the second wicket with opener Abhinav Mukund, and put on 65 for the third wicket with Laxman, who then shared an unbroken stand of 75 with Virat Kohli before the close.

Dravid, a century-maker in the first Test, reached his 50 from 157 balls, driving Fidel Edwards through mid-off for a deuce in the first over after tea.

But he fell in the fifth over after the break, when he top-edged a cut at a short, rising ball outside the off-stump from Edwards, and was caught behind. He struck just three boundaries from 171 deliveries in close to four hours.

When he departed, Laxman took control, reaching his 50 from 120 balls, sweeping leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo behind square leg for two.

He was fortunate on 69 however, when West Indies captain Darren Sammy dropped a return catch in the last hour.

Laxman however, preserved, and his near four-hour long innings contained six fours from 171 balls.

He and Kohli, not out on 26, batted through the final two hours of the day to ensure that India enhanced their chances of wrapping up their second straight Test series victory in the Caribbean.

Dravid and Laxman had started to beef up the Indians' lead, carrying them to 143 for two at tea.

The two batsmen drew upon their vast experience to consolidate their side's position, after Mukund, playing in his second Test, fell in the first hour after lunch for 48, gloving a snorter from Edwards.

India had reached 62 for one at lunch, after play started 50 minutes later than regularly scheduled.

The Indians resumed on their overnight total of 23 without loss, but opener Murali Vijay departed in the second full over of the day, when he was caught behind for three off Ravi Rampaul, edging an unplayable delivery that moved away sharply.

Mukund and Dravid started to blossom, following a circumspect start against a West Indies attack that continued to exploit the lively Kensington Oval pitch.

Mukund drove West Indies captain Darren Sammy through mid-off for his second boundary to get into stride, and Dravid steered a delivery from Edwards between third slip and the gully for his first four.

Dravid however, had an anxious wait on nine, when he turned a delivery from Sammy to mid-wicket, and fielder Adrian Barath claimed a low catch, diving forward.

But a consultation between on-field umpire Asad Rauf and TV umpire Gregory
Brathwaite gave Dravid a reprieve.

Kaneria files petition against PCB

Jayawardene century sets up Sri Lanka win

LEEDS, England: Mahela Jayawardene's career-best 144 provided the platform for Sri Lanka's 69-run victory against England in the second one-day international at Headingley here on Friday.Sri Lanka's win, which levelled the five-match series at 1-1, looked likely after Jayawardene's innings, his highest score in 343 ODIs, surpassing his 128 against India at Sharjah in 2000, powered the tourists to 309 for five. That meant England had to top their previous winning score batting second in an ODI of 306 for five against Pakistan in Karachi in 2000 if they were to take a 2-0 lead against the World Cup finalists. But they struggled to maintain the required run-rate and were bowled out for 240 with 25 balls to spare. Both seamer Suranga Lakmal and off-spinner Suraj Randiv took three for 43.Sri Lanka lost two early wickets to run-outs to be 45 for two in the 10th over before a record partnership of 159 between Jayawardene, dropped on seven, and Kumar Sangakkara, who made 69, turned the tide.Cook, who win the toss Friday after leading England to a 110-run win in the rain-affected opener at The Oval on Tuesday and Craig Kieswetter made a bright start to the chase.Left-hander Cook, belying suggestions he is a slow scorer, made 48 off 53 balls including five boundaries. But his promising innings ended when a lofted cover-drive against Randiv went straight to Angelo Mathews. Kevin Pietersen swept Randiv for six but on 13 his drive off leg-spinner Jeevan Mendis was well-caught by Lasith Malinga, running round from long-on. And when Jonathan Trott was bowled for a pedestrian 39 off 54 balls by Lakmal's superb inswinging yorker, England were faltering at 144 for four.Eoin Morgan tried to revive the innings by hoisting Mendis for two huge sixes off successive deliveries. But on 52 the former Ireland international he was brilliantly stumped by Sangakkara off a Randiv delivery the wicketkeeper took shoulder high.England's victory hopes disappeared with the left hander, his exit sparking a slump that saw three wickets lost for five runs.Even the in-form Ian Bell struggled, his 35 taking 48 balls before he holed out off Nuwan Kulasekara. Earlier, England off-spinner Graeme Swann who dropped Jayawardene -- took two for 42.But the seamers suffered with both Stuart Broad and Tim Bresnan conceding 70 runs each.Jayawardene's single off medium-pacer Bresnan saw him to his 15th ODI hundred and fifth against England in 118 balls with seven boundaries.Former captains Jayawardene and Sangakkara topped their previous Sri Lankan third-wicket record stand against England of 140 at Chester-le-Street in 2006.However, they were separated when Sangakkara was beaten by a sharply turning delivery from Swann and stumped by Kieswetter.Jayawardene's superb innings ended when, deceived by Swann, he was also stumped having faced just 150 balls with 14 boundaries. The series continues at Lord's on Sunday.

Jayawardene ton powers Sri Lanka to 309-5 against England

LEEDS, England: Mahela Jayawardene's career-best century powered Sri Lanka to 309 for five against England in the second one-day international (ODI) at Headingley here on Friday. The opener made 144 Jayawardene's highest score in 343 ODIs surpassing his 128 against India at Sharjah in 2000 -- as Sri Lanka looked to level this five-match series at 1-1.A couple of reckless run-outs reduced Sri Lanka to 45 for two in the 10th over after England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to field. But a record stand of 159 between former captains Jayawardene, dropped on seven, and Kumar Sangakkara, who made 69, turned the tide Sri Lanka's way.Angelo Mathews kept the runs coming with a brisk 46 not out off 30 balls while Jeevan Mendis's unbeaten seven included a hooked six off Stuart Broad that saw Sri Lanka past 300. Off-spinner Graeme Swann -- who dropped Jayawardene -- led England's attack with two wickets, both stumpings completed by wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter to remove Sangakkara and Jayawardene. But the seamers suffered with Broad, Tim Bresnan and Jade Dernbach managing just one wicket between them for 203 runs in a combined 28 overs.James Anderson's none for 44 in 10 overs was respectable in comparison.Sri Lanka skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan was run out for nine when he failed to beat Broad's underarm direct hit on the bowler's end stumps The tourists were fortunate not to lose Jayawardene soon afterwards when first slip Swann dropped a high chance off Bresnan.Dinesh Chandimal, replacing the now retired Sanath Jayasuriya following England's 110-run win at The Oval on Tuesday, fell in similar fashion to Dilshan for five, only this time Anderson hit the stumps.Cook, with none of his frontline bowlers disturbing the third-wicket duo, brought on part-time off-spinner Kevin Pietersen. But it was not long before left-hander Sangakkara swept him for four, his fifth boundary, to bring up a 53-ball fifty. Then a single off medium-pacer Bresnan took Jayawardene through to his 15th ODI hundred and fifth against England in 118 balls with seven boundaries.Jayawardene, more of a touch than a power player, then opened his shoulders to drive Bresnan straight back over his head for four.Jayawardene and Sangakkara surpassed their previous Sri Lankan third-wicket ODI record partnership against England of 140 at Chester-le-Street in 2006.However, they were separated when Sangakkara, advancing down the pitch, was beaten by a sharply turning delivery from Swann and stumped by Kieswetter.Jayawardene, on 118, then saw a leaping Cook at cover drop a tough chance off Dernbach. But his superb innings ended when, deceived by a Swann arm-ball, he was stumped having faced just 150 balls with 14 boundaries.

Pakistan want to host ICC event in 2018

Hong Kong, June 29 (IANS) Pakistan, a no-go zone for international cricket teams since an attack on the Sri Lankan team in 2009, has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to host a major event in 2018.ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said Wednesday that the executive board noted a request from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to consider hosting an ICC event in 2018. No discussion was held and no assurances were given as the ICC has no confirmed event currently scheduled for 2018.'We fully understand the PCB request and we will consider if it is possible to host an event in Pakistan subject to the standard safety and security clearances,' said Lorgat. The ICC executive board also reviewed the comprehensive report submitted by Pakistan Task Team (PTT).The committee made 63 recommendations covering the key areas of governance, cricket administration, playing structure, financial viability and communications. The PTT comprises Giles Clarke (chairman), Mike Brearley, Peter Chingoka, Haroon Lorgat (ICC Chief Executive), Ranjan Madugalle, Ramiz Raja, and David Richardson (ICC General Manager-Cricket).Lorgat thanked the PTT members and the PCB for their constructive engagement during the past two years.'The report was adopted unanimously by the ICC Board and I am pleased that the PCB will consider this report at its next Board meeting,' he said

Imran backs ICC ban on government meddling

KARACHI: Pakistan's legendary former captain Imran Khan on Thursday welcomed a decision from cricket's governing body to ban political appointments, calling for a total revamp of the national board. The ICC executive board on Thursday gave cricket boards 12 months to implement free elections and another 12-month grace period to enact the changes before any sanctions would be considered. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), whose chairman Ijaz Butt was appointed by the president, was not immediately reachable for comment but it has threatened legal action in the past if the constitution is changed.Khan, one of Pakistan's most vocal opposition politicians and who founded the Tehrik-e-Insaaf (Movement for Justice) after retiring from cricket in 1992, welcomed the amendment. He said that the PCB now had a chance to become a real institution if the system was overhauled."The amendment will help Pakistan as there is no transparency and accountability in the current set-up," Khan told "But to gain full benefit, Pakistan must fix the cricket structure with a new constitution on regional grounds where officials are elected."Khan said the changes could allow Pakistan to perform better."If we have our cricket structure right, Pakistan has more talent than anywhere in the world, and we will dominate the world," said Khan, who led Pakistan to their only World Cup title in 1992.Former PCB chairman Arif Abassi said reform had long been needed.
"I resigned in 1996 because there was uncalled for government interference when I wanted to make the PCB a private company with shares," said Abassi.Abassi said the ICC was after Pakistan after a slew of public irregularities and said: "It's now time we find the right people to overhaul our system and who know how to do it," he said. But fellow former PCB chief Khalid Mahmood rejected the ICC imposition as a violation of Pakistan's independence."The ICC has no business to tell us how to run our cricket," said Mahmood, calling for legal action if necessary."We must resist on this and although legal action is the last resort, one has to back it because we have to draw a line on sovereignty," said Mahmood.Former spinner Iqbal Qasim thought Pakistan would have trouble in enacting the change."While other Boards like England and Australia have a proper system, Pakistan will face some problems in implementing the change and they will need to overhaul the system from grass-root level," said Qasim."We need to think out a proper plan, be it with the government's help, to implement the change in two years."Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are also directly affected by the amendment as their cricketing affairs are similarly run on government directives.

No meddling: ICC tells governments

HONG KONG: Cricket's governing body on Thursday banned countries from appointing politicians to national cricket boards, vowing to free the sport from undue government influence. The International Cricket Council told a media conference in Hong Kong that it had made the decision to uphold "the important principle of free elections and the independence" of the sport."It was agreed that all member boards must implement the provisions before annual conference June 2012 and a further 12 months -- to June 2013 -- would be allowed before any sanctions be considered," the ICC said in a statement issued in Hong Kong. The reform, which allows the ICC to suspend a member country in the event of government interference in the running of a national cricket board, will be hugely controversial in Pakistan, where the president is the cricket board's patron. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will also be hit by the change. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) could not immediately be reached for comment.Chairman Ijaz Butt has been criticised by former players, politicians and media for being a political appointee of the ruling Pakistan People's Party. The PCB has already sent a legal notice to the ICC on the amendment and has threatened legal action if the constitution is changed. The decision was taken at a meeting of the ICC's full council after four days of talks between the chief executives' committee and executive board at glitzy hotels in downtown Hong Kong."This is a significant step towards achieving best practice and together with the independent governance review, I am excited by the commitment of the ICC to introduce best possible corporate governance," ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said.

Pakistan slated to tour India in 2012

MUMBAI: Pakistan have been pencilled in to tour India for a full series of Test and one-day cricket matches next year, in what would be a breakthrough in relations that were hit by the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks. The International Cricket Council governing body's latest Future Tours Programme shows that the two South Asian rivals could play three Tests and five one-day internationals in March and April 2012.India is designated as the host of the series, but an ICC spokesman told on Thursday that the list was provisional and indicated that the matches were likely to be played at a neutral venue.Any series would be organised entirely by both countries' governing bodies, he added. No one was immediately available for comment at the Board of Control for Cricket in India.India severed cricketing links with its neighbour after the Mumbai attacks, which killed 166 people and which New Delhi blamed on outlawed Islamist militants based across the border in Pakistan. No major international cricket side has toured Pakistan since gunmen attacked the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in March 2009, killing eight people and injuring seven others.Pakistan now plays "home" games in the United Arab Emirates, England and New Zealand.India last played Pakistan in this year's World Cup semi-final at Mohali, beating them in a keenly-watched encounter attended by the two countries' prime ministers Manmohan Singh and Yousuf Raza Gilani.
Afterwards there were calls by players and politicians for the resumption of cricketing links, as millions of fans were missing out due to the nuclear-armed neighbours' strained political ties.India's foreign secretary, Nirupama Rao, even said that the country was ready to send its team to Pakistan, if provided full security. The Pakistan Cricket Board welcomed Rao's statement and said it was exploring options for playing a series at a neutral venue. The last time Pakistan played a Test match in India was in the southern city of Bangalore in December 2007. India won the series 1-0.Apart from the World Cup semi-final, their the last one-day international on Indian soil was in November 2007 in Jaipur. Pakistan won the match but lost that series 3-2

ICC to keep 14-team Cricket World Cup after U-turn

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has performed a U-turn on controversial plans to reduce the size of the Cricket World Cup after agreeing to allow four non-Test playing nations to participate in the next edition of the competition. The ICC originally planned to cut the list of participants to 10 “full member” nations, excluding “associates” such as Ireland, the Netherlands, Canada and Kenya, which all took part in the 14-team Cricket World Cup earlier this year. The governing body’s initial decision was made after criticism of the length of the 2011 tournament, which ran from February 19 to April 2 in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka, but the ICC agreed to review its proposal after complaints from the lower-ranked nations. The ICC, which held its annual conference in Hong Kong, confirmed that four associate members will now take part in the tournament after a qualifying process. “The ICC executive board today reversed its previous decisions and approved a 14-team format for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 to be held in Australia and New Zealand and a 12-team format for the ICC World Twenty20 events in 2012 (Sri Lanka) and 2014 (Bangladesh),” read a statement from the ICC. The Twenty20 events were initially slated to include 16 teams, up from 12.The ICC also announced the 2019 World Cup would be a 10-team event, with the top eight places going to the top-ranked teams and two berths being awarded in a pre-qualifying tournament. Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom told AFP: “I suppose the immediate reaction is one of relief, and that we can all now divert our energies in the significantly more proactive pursuit of trying to qualify.”The board also approved a recommendation made by its chief executives' committee on Monday to make the controversial Umpire Decision Review System (DRS) mandatory in all Tests and one-day matches. Hot Spot, the “thermal imaging” technology now available and made mandatory in the DRS, will mostly be used for close catches and edges. On Wednesday, the ICC executive board is expected to discuss plans to scrap the ICC's two-year rotational presidency.
