Pietersen interested in regaining England captaincy

England batsman Kevin Pietersen "would love to have another go" at captaining the side if Andrew Strauss steps down as one-day skipper. According to The Independent, Strauss is reportedly set to relinquish the role to focus on his Test duties.Pietersen, who led the side in both formats for less than six months in 2008-09, has said that he would happily step into his shoes."If the one-day job becomes available, I would definitely be up for it," he told the Daily Mirror He added: "A lot of water has passed under the bridge since I last did it and it's something I've thought about in the past few weeks since the rumours surfaced about Andy Strauss stepping down. Second time around I think I could do a real good job as I'd be older and wiser, and would handle a few things a lot differently."He said: "I didn't think I was too bad first time around - we had our moments against South Africa, and it took a century of freakish brilliance from Sachin Tendulkar to deny us a famous Test win in Chennai. So, if the opportunity came up and I was asked I would say 'thank you very much, I would love to have another go'."

Windies, Pakistan set to launch T20 series

Old foes West Indies and Pakistan face each other in a Twenty20 International for the first time on Thursday. The Beausejour Cricket Ground in this coastal town on the northern circumference of this volcanic island of St Lucia forms a picturesque backdrop for the occasion. It is hard to believe that though Twenty20 matches have become popular in the modern game that the two sides have not been fortunate enough to cross each other's paths in this version before now.Pakistan manager Intikhab Alam said there were great expectations of his side, following a strong, if not successful show in the World Cup."We've brought some youngsters with us, and I think it's a golden opportunity for them to make a name for themselves, and to make a career in the sport," said Alam."It was a long journey from Pakistan to the Caribbean, but we travelled well, and the boys are all happy and they're well.""The people in Pakistan are very happy with us [following the World Cup]. Now the expectations are even higher for this tour of the West Indies because we have never won a [Test] series out here before." West Indies manager Richie Richardson said there have been enough good individual performances from his side in the last few months to make him feel confident, but they would have to put it all together to overcome the Pakistanis."We're about to head into this series, which is very important - it's a home series," he said."As a region, it's always very important, and for our home fans, who look forward to excitement and to us doing well.""It's easier for us to do well with our home crowd and their support, and it gives an opportunity to bring ourselves back up the ladder - to dig deep, work hard, prove ourselves, and give back to our fans."He added: "People across the World have been accustomed to the West Indies providing exciting cricket and we must work harder to give that to them."Both sides have made significant changes in personnel since the World Cup, and have invested heavily in a number of unproven players for the limited-overs portion of the series, which includes this T20I.Pakistan have dropped wicketkeeper/batsman Kamran Akmal and all-rounder Abdul Razzaq, while fast bowler Umar Gul and experienced batsman Younus Khan were dropped from the team.Wicketkeeper Muhammad Salman has been given a chance, while batsmen Hammad Azam and Usman Salahuddin, as well as left-arm fast-medium bowler Sadaf Hussain have been included in the team for the first time.Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, and Sulieman Benn - four high-profile members of the West Indies World Cup squad - have all been sidelined by the selectors for this match, and the first two One-day Internationals that follow. For this T20I, the home team have brought in the uncapped quartet of batsman Danza Hyatt, all-rounder Christopher Barnwell, off-spinner Ashley Nurse, and left-arm fast bowler Krishmar Santokie.West Indies have also been fortified with the inclusion of stylish batsman Marlon Samuels, who is once again eligible for selection, after serving a two-year ban for his alleged involvement with illegal bookmakers.Utility player Lendl Simmons, the nephew of Ireland coach Phil Simmons, the former West Indies all-rounder, is also back in the squad, along with batsman Andre Fletcher, who will handle duties behind the stumps.
Squads:West Indies: (from): Darren Sammy (captain), Christopher Barnwell, Devendra Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Andre Fletcher, Danza Hyatt, Ashley Nurse, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Krishmar Santokie, Lendl Simmons.Pakistan: (from): Shahid Afridi (captain), Misbah-ul-Haq (vice captain), Abdur Rehman, Ahmed Shahzad, Asad Shafiq, Hammad Azman, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Salman, Sadaf Hussain, Saeed Ajmal, Tanveer Ahmed, Taufeeq Umar, Umar Akmal, Usman Salahuddin, Wahab Riaz.

ICC to reconsider World Cup format changes

Updated at: 1830 PST,  Tuesday, April 19, 2011
LONDON: The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday that they have been asked by their president, Sharad Pawar, to reconsider proposals to streamline the cricket World Cup.Under plans announced during an ICC summit in Mumbai earlier this month, participation at the 2015 and 2019 World Cups will be restricted to just the 10 full ICC member teams. This year's World Cup, won by India, featured 14 teams, and the decision to exclude non Test-playing nations such as Ireland and Kenya from future editions prompted angry protests from the countries set to be left out.In a press release from the ICC, Pawar said: "I have given this matter further serious thought and will request the Board to consider this topic once more."I can understand the views of the Associates and Affiliates and ICC will seek to deal with this issue in the best way possible."

No fixing at Hong Kong Sixes, says chief

Updated at: 1444 PST,  Tuesday, April 19, 2011
HONG KONG: Hong Kong's cricket chief has denied there is any corruption at the city's high-profile Sixes tournament after New Zealand players said they were approached and offered gifts, a report said Tuesday.Dinesh Tandon said the Hong Kong Cricket Association was investigating after players told the International Cricket Council (ICC) a man who called himself a Middle Eastern diamond dealer made the offer during the tournament in November."We have been made aware by the ICC that an incident happened and we are investigating it further," Tandon told the South China Morning Post."But I can assure you that there has been no instance of match-fixing or spot-fixing. We have strictly adhered to ICC guidelines on corruption and I'm confident nothing happened."The incident in November follows a furore over spot-fixing revelations during Pakistan's Test tour of England last year, which resulted in lengthy bans for three Pakistani players. The Cricinfo website (www.espncricinfo.com) said the New Zealand players -- whose team included Black Cap veterans Scott Styris, Darryl Tuffey and Nathan McCullum -- were interviewed by ICC anti-corruption officials."The Hong Kong Sixes aren't the usual bilateral series or an ICC event, these sorts of events that do take place that are festivals if you like," New Zealand players' association chief Heath Mills told Cricinfo. "And obviously if there isn't an ICC anti-corruption official there to police it, a lot of the protocols aren't going to be followed."The Hong Kong Sixes, which started in 1992 and often features star international players, is not an ICC event but is sanctioned by the world governing body.
