Ryder, Smith steer Pune to 7-wkt win over Chennai

PUNE: New Zealand’s Jesse Ryder and Australia’s Steven Smith guided Pune Warriors to an easy seven-wicket victory with four balls to spare in a Twenty20 match of the fifth Indian Premier League here at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium on Saturday.
Chasing a modest total of 156, Pune Warriors achieved the target in 19.2 overs for the loss of three wickets.
Ryder smashed an unbeaten 73 from 56 balls with seven fours and a six while Smith hit 44 not out off 22 balls with four boundaries and three sixes. Both added 66 runs for an unbeaten fourth wicket partnership.
Earlier, Chennai Super Kings batted first after their captain Mahindra Singh Dhoni won the toss and made 155 for five in the allotted 20 overs.
Main scorers were India’s Ravindra Jadeja (44) and South Africa’s Faf du Plessis (43). Both struck two sixes each.
For Pune Warriors, leg-break bowler Rahul Sharma claimed two wickets for 16 runs.
Pakistan’s first sports tv channel Geo Super televised this match live from Pune.

Bangladesh to tour Pakistan in April

LAHORE: Bangladesh will tour Pakistan later this month (April) marking the return of International cricket to Pakistan.
During the tour, Pakistan and Bangladesh will play one T20 and one ODI.
The ODI will be played on April 29 while the T20 is scheduled for April 30.

Australia look to spin twins in second Test

PORT OF SPAIN : Australia may employ two specialist spinners for the second Test against the West Indies, which starts on Sunday at the Queen's Park Oval.
Nathan Lyon, who played in the three-wicket victory in Barbados in the first Test, could be partnered by left-arm spinner Michael Beer as the Australians look to wrap up the three-match series.
"Over the last two seasons it's been relatively low-scoring but also very, very spin-friendly. The temptation to play two spinners could be there," said Australia coach Mickey Arthur.
"You never write that off until you have a look at the conditions. I guess we've just got to look at conditions, then decide how best we're going to get 20 wickets."
Lyon took just one wicket in the three-wicket win over West Indies in Barbados, while Beer has only played one Test.
That was against England in Sydney in January 2011, where his match figures were an embarrassing one for 112.
Meanwhile, Arthur praised Michael Clarke after the skipper declared the team's first innings at 43 runs behind the West Indies before pushing for victory in the Bridgetown gloom on Wednesday.
"I thought it was a great idea and I sort of just backed him on it," said the coach.
"Michael needs to take all the plaudits for that because it was a brave decision that worked out for us.
"Tactically he is very good. He's very positive, a very aggressive captain and that's something I really enjoy and something I really like."
The last time that Australia played at Queen's Park Oval nine years ago, Ricky Ponting was man of the match.
He scored 206, his highest Test score at the time, as Australia scored a massive 4-576.
It was a high-scoring match that Australia went on to win by 118 runs. Of the current squad, Ponting is the only one to have played Test cricket at the ground.
Preparations were hindered on Friday when afternoon rain meant Australia had to cancel their training session, although the West Indies managed to complete theirs before the rain arrived.
The player that the West Indies would surely have loved to have selected is Sunil Narine.
The Queen's Park Oval is his home ground and the off-break variations that allowed him to take 34 first-class wickets at an average of just 11.88 brought him to the attention of the selectors.
Unfortunately for the hosts, he won a lucrative Indian Premier League contract and, like Marlon Samuels, is unavailable.
Instead, they have called up off-spinner Shane Shillingford, who last played Test cricket in November 2010 before his bowling action was deemed illegal.
His 14 Test wickets have cost 56.78 runs apiece but in his only appearance in Port-of-Spain he took 4-27 against South Africa.
The weather could play a part as it did in Barbados, with rain likely at some point over the five days, but it is not likely to dampen the spirits of the locals as they play their steel drums in support of a team that they are starting to believe in once again.

IPL viewing figures dip in opening week

NEW DELHI: Television ratings have nose-dived for the opening games of the much-hyped Indian Premier League this season, according to figures released on Thursday.

Television Viewer Ratings (TVR) were down 18.7 percent in the first six games compared with the same period last year, said Tam Media Research, India's leading television research agency.

Viewing figures also dipped last year, when the event's fourth edition began less than a week after India's victory in the World Cup at home in Mumbai.

Since its inception in 2008, viewing patterns have showed high interest in the IPL's opening and final weeks with a sharp decline in the middle.

The tournament this year started on April 4 and will be completed with the final in Chennai on May 27.

"I think the whole IPL business model is a bit shaky now and not as robust as it was made out to be when it first started," Sridhar Ramanujam, the head of brand consulting firm Brand Comm, told the Cricinfo website.

IPL chief Rajiv Shukla, who had earlier predicted that the fifth season would be the most successful ever, was not available to comment on the figures.

Leading sponsors have turned their backs on the tournament, a mix of glamour, entertainment and rich purses for the world's leading cricketers playing fast-action T20 cricket.

At least three regular advertisers -- Parle, LG Electronics and Godrej -- backed out from the IPL this year.

The Champions League Twenty20, an offshoot of the IPL which involves leading domestic teams from around the world, lost its title sponsor, AirTel, after just one year due to lack of interest among fans.

The 76-match IPL 2012 has nine teams playing each other on a home and away basis before a four-game play-off.

Chennai stun Bangalore in record IPL chase

CHENNAI: South African allrounder Albie Morkel smashed 28 in the 19th over from Virat Kohli to help Chennai Super Kings achieve an unbelievable five-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore in the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk on Thursday.
Chasing an improbable target of 206, Chennai snatched an astonishing win off the last ball of the match.
They needed 43 runs from the last two overs and they completed the upholding task hitting 45 in 12 balls.
South African batsman Faf du Plessis top scored with 71 from 46 balls with four sixes and five fours to earn the man-of-the-match award and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni made a breezy 24-ball 41 with two sixes.
However, the winning shot was played by Ravindra Jadeja after Morkel made 28 from just seven balls with three towering sixes and two fours and West Indian Dwayne Bravo scored 25 off 15 balls with a six and two fours.
For Bangalore, Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan took three wickets for 21.
Earlier, Bangalore winning the toss batted first and piled up a huge total of 205 for eight in 20 overs.
Chris Gayle of the West Indies struck six sixes and two fours in his 68 made off only 35 balls while Virat Kohli hit 57 in 46 balls with five fours and two sixes and Mayank Agarwal scored 45 off 26 balls with five fours and three sixes.
Gayle and Kohli were involved in a second wicket partnership of 109 runs in eleven overs.
Australia’s left-arm fast-medium bowler Doug Bollinger claimed three for 24.
In all, 23 sixes were hit in the match – 12 by Bangalore and 11 by Chennai.

England jealous of IPL, says Pietersen

NEW DELHI: Jealousy could be the reason for negative attitudes in England towards the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL), England batting star Kevin Pietersen has said.
The Twenty20 IPL was an instant hit when it began in 2008 as a mix of glamour, entertainment and international stars playing short-form cricket, but it has attracted little interest in England.
"It (the IPL) is very much struggling to find acceptance back home," the South Africa-born England batsman, who is playing for Delhi Daredevils in the ongoing tournament, was quoted as saying in the Indian media on Thursday.
"It saddens me because I have had an amazing time at the IPL, and it's down to a lot of jealousy I think which is sad. It saddens me all the negative publicity the IPL gets in the (British) media, I don't know why."
His comments came as the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, in its latest issue, blamed the influence of T2O games for India's recent dismal run in Test cricket which saw them lose eight successive matches in England and Australia.
"The disintegration of India's feted batting line-up has coincided with the rise of a Twenty20-based nationalism, the growth of private marketeers and high-level conflicts of interest," wrote Wisden editor Lawrence Booth.
"It is a perfect storm. And the global game sits unsteadily in the eye. India, your sport needs you."
Pietersen, the only big England star taking part in this year's IPL, said experience gained in the tournament will be useful when England tour India for a Test and one-day series later this year.
"It will benefit the team (England), especially because we will be touring India later in the year," he said.
"Playing another month in the subcontinent honing my skills, training with the spinners and practicing, I consider myself so very fortunate."
England fast bowler Stuart Broad was forced to miss this year's IPL due to injury, while pace spearhead James Anderson and leading spinner Graeme Swann went unsold at the auction in February.
England failed to cope with spin on their recent Asia tour when they lost four of their five Tests, three against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates and one in Sri Lanka.
