India block Pakistan-born Usman Khawaja’s visa

SYDNEY: Pakistan-born Australian batsman Usman Khawaja on Tuesday said he was being refused a visa into India for next month’s Champions League Twenty20 tournament because of his country of birth.Khawaja vented his anger on social media site Twitter, saying India’s visa department “need to sort their issues out “Refusing to let me travel to India as an Australian, because I wasn’t born here. Wow,” wrote the 24-year-old.In an exchange with his Portuguese-born New South Wales team-mate Moises Henriques, Khawaja said it “wasn’t that I wasn’t born here but where I was, brother”.Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed that Khawaja’s visa had been held up by officials at the Indian High Commission (embassy) but said they were confident of resolving the issue before the tournament.“There has been a stoppage in the system at the Indian High Commission in Australia with Usman’s application,” CA spokesman Philip Pope told“Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia are seeking to understand the detail behind the stoppage with our colleagues at the Indian High Commission.”Pope said the cricketing body had a long-standing relationship with the Indian mission and “we generally find that we resolve our issues mutually, so we’ll work through this once we’ve understood the detail“I can’t give you a timeline of when it will be resolved, but I’m confident given our history and our relationship that we will resolve this as soon as possible,” he said.Khawaja, the first Muslim to wear the baggy green for Australia and also a qualified pilot, is on the 20-man long list for the NSW Twenty20 side, of which 15 will ultimately be sent. The promising young left-hander made his Test debut for Australia in the fifth match of the Ashes series in Sydney in January, signing with Derbyshire later that month for the English domestic season

Opportunity for Sri Lanka to become number-one ranked ODI side

Sri Lanka will go top of the Reliance ICC ODI Championship table for the first time in its proud history if it beats Australia by 4-1 or better in the five-match ODI series which begins at Pallekele International Stadium from Wednesday.Four-time world champion Australia, which has been holding the top spot since September 2009, currently sits on 130 ratings points and leads second-placed Sri Lanka by 12 ratings points. However, Sri Lanka will take a lead of one ratings point if it wins the series 4-1 while it will move eight points clear of Australia if it wins all the five matches of the series.A 4-1 series win will put Sri Lanka on 125 ratings points, relegating Australia to 124 ratings points while a 5-0 win will earn Sri Lanka 11 ratings points which will put it on 129 ratings points while dropping Australia to 121 which will concede nine ratings points for its failure to win a single match. On the other side of the coin, Sri Lanka will drop behind South Africa into fourth position if Australia wins by 4-1 or better. While a 4-1 series win will lift Michael Clarke's side to 133 ratings points, Tillakaratne Dilshan's side will slip to 115 ratings points - one behind South Africa - whereas a 5-0 win for Australia will put it on 136 ratings points as compared to Sri Lanka's 112.Meanwhile in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen, Australia's Shane Watson is the highest-ranked batsman from either side in third position - 46 points behind South Africa captain AD de Villiers.Kumar Sangakkara, Michael Hussey and rival captains Dilshan and Clarke are the other batsmen inside the top 10 while former captain Ricky Ponting occupies 13th position.Mitchell Johnson (seventh), Brett Lee (16th) and Nuwan Kulasekara (20th) are the bowlers who figure inside the top 20 in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers while Watson holds the top spot in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders.

Dockrell helps Ireland book berth for ICC U19 CWC

n Australia.Ireland beat Namibia in the game replayed during the day, following a washout on Sunday, at the Coleraine Cricket ClubNamibia batted first and posted a healthy 245 for nine in its 50 overs. Pelham Myburgh (66: 111b, 4x4) and Gert Lotter (57: 43b, 7x4) played handy knocks to help Namibia reach a competitive total. For the home team, skipper George Dockrell bowled yet another magnificent spell of 3-35.Ireland slipped to 32 for three in the chase. But Jason van der Merwe (71: 90b, 10x4) and skipper Dockrell (83 n.o.: 113b, 5x4) added 99 runs for the fourth wicket to put the chase back on track. Later, Shane Getkate (59 n.o.: 51b, 3x4, 1x6) added an unbroken 115 runs for the fifth wicket with Dockrell to help Ireland overhaul the target with six wickets to spare.Dockrell?s all-round show earned him the Man of the Match and quite naturally he was thrilled with the performance of his team: "Yes definitely it is great to see the team through to the World Cup. All credit to the team who bowled brilliantly today. The boys fielded quite well too. Jason (van der Merwe) played a great knock at the start. Then I stayed on with him. Later, Shane (Getkate) played a fantastic knock to take us through to the end. It was a brilliant all-round performance by the team. It was a result of hard work that we have through so many tight games. It is a great relief to have finally qualified and to be leading the team into the Word Cup.On the final day of the competition on Tuesday, Namibia plays Kenya at Drummond, Ireland and PNG go head to head at Eglinton, Scotland takes on Vanuatu at Coleraine, Nepal and USA play each other at Limavady and Canada plays Afghanistan at Strabane. There is plenty to play for on the final day of the competition as three spots are still up for grabs at next year?s ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup.

Buoyant England eye top ranking

A rampant England team brimming with confidence go into the third test against India on Wednesday primed to claim the victory that would secure the world number one ranking from their opponents.England, 2-0 up in the four-match series, will be without prolific batsman Jonathan Trott because of a shoulder injury, while India will miss their two most experienced bowlers, seamer Zaheer Khan and spinner Harbhajan Singh.India, top of the rankings for almost two years, have never won at Edgbaston in five tests at the venue, losing four and drawing once.Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men will have to raise their game with a revamped bowling attack, though batsman Virender Sehwag may return after shoulder surgery."(Zaheer) will be a big loss as he's the leader of their attack, he's such a skilful bowler, especially in English conditions, he always bowls well here," England fast bowler James Anderson told Sky Sports."It is a big loss for them but we can't get carried away with one individual going home because they've got strength in depth and we know that whoever replaces him will have quality and we've got to look to get the better of him."They won't want to lose the series and if they've got any chance of staying in the series they know they have got to win this week. We know they are going to come hard at us and we've got to try and match that. It's their number one spot that they are defending so they have got a lot to play for.Leg-spinner Amit Mishra and Zaheer's fellow left-arm paceman Rudra Pratap Singh are expected to come into the team, while a batsman will also be omitted if Sehwag is deemed fit enough to make his return to test action.England will have to change their team as Essex batsman Ravi Bopara has come into a 12-man squad for Trott.Bopara seems likely to play as England are not expected to revert to a five-man bowling attack including both Tim Bresnan and Chris Tremlett who missed the last match with a hamstring injury.Bresnan did his chances of retaining his place no harm in Nottingham by scoring 90 in the second innings and taking a test-best five for 48 to help seal the win."It's an ideal opportunity for me," Bopara said. "I know it's come off the back of an injury to one of our main players but nevertheless it's an opportunity for me."I'm chuffed to bits that I've been given the opportunity and I can't wait to start on Wednesday. I'm coming into a great side."We're not No. 1 yet, that's obviously the aim. It's a great team to play for, there's some great players and they've done a fantastic job.

One Day International

This article is about the ruleset for men's cricket. For the similar ruleset for women's cricket, see Women's One-day International cricket.
A One Day International (ODI) is a form of limited overs cricket, in which a fixed number of overs, usually 50, but in the past 40, 45 or 60 overs, are played between two teams with international status. The Cricket World Cup is played in this format. One Day International matches are also called "Limited Overs Internationals (LOI)", because they are limited overs cricket matches between national sides, and if the weather interferes they are not always completed in one day. Important one-day matches, international and domestic, often have two days set aside, the second day being a "reserve" day to allow more chance of the game being completed if a result is not possible on the first day (for instance if play is prevented or interrupted by rain).
The international one-day game is a late twentieth-century development. The first ODI was played on 5 January 1971 between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. When the first three days of the third Test were washed out officials decided to abandon the match and, instead, play a one-off one day game consisting of 40 eight-ball overs per side. Australia won the game by 5 wickets.
In the late 1970s, Kerry Packer established the rival World Series Cricket (WSC) competition, and it introduced many of the features of One Day International cricket that are now commonplace, including coloured uniforms, matches played at night under floodlights with a white ball and dark sight screens, and, for television broadcasts, multiple camera angles, effects microphones to capture sounds from the players on the pitch, and on-screen graphics. The first of the matches with coloured uniforms was the WSC Australians in wattle gold versus WSC West Indians in coral pink, played at VFL Park in Melbourne on 17 January 1979. It was credited with making cricket a more professional sport.
-------------------------
RULS
----------------------------------

In the main the Laws of cricket apply. However, in ODIs, each team gets to bat only a fixed number of overs. In the early days of ODI cricket, the number of overs was generally 60 overs per side but now it has been uniformly fixed at 50 overs.Simply stated, the game works as follows:
  • An ODI is contested by 2 teams of 11 players each.
  • The Captain of the side winning the toss chooses to either bat or bowl (field) first.
  • The team batting first sets the target score in a single innings. The innings lasts until the batting side is "all out" (i.e., 10 of the 11 batting players are "out") or all of the first side's allotted overs are used up.
  • Each bowler is restricted to bowling a maximum of 10 overs (fewer in the case of rain-reduced matches and in any event generally no more than one fifth or 20% of the total overs per innings).
  • The team batting second tries to score more than the target score in order to win the match. Similarly, the side bowling second tries to bowl out the second team for less than the target score in order to win.
  • If the number of runs scored by both teams is equal when the second team loses all of its wickets or exhausts all its overs, then the game is declared a tie (regardless of the number of wickets lost by either team).
  • Where a number of overs are lost, for example, due to inclement weather conditions, then the number of overs may be reduced. Where the number of overs available for the team batting second is perforce different from the number of overs faced by the team that batted first, the result may be determined by the Duckworth-Lewis method The floodlights would be positioned in such a way that it would not interfere with fielding teams and captains would be allowed a cloth on field should the ball become moist.
---------------------------------------
power play
-----------------------------
The bowling team is subject to fielding restrictions stipulating that nine fielders, including two fielders in catching positions, must be inside the fielding circle for a set number of overs. Traditionally, the fielding restrictions applied for the first 15 overs of each innings. In a 10 month
trial period starting 30 July 2005, the ICC introduced the Powerplays rule as part of a series of new ODI regulations. Under the Powerplays rule, fielding restrictions apply for the first 10 overs, plus two blocks of five overs (called Powerplay Fives). From October 2008 the batting side decides when one of the remaining two blocks occur, the fielding side decides when to begin the other Powerplay. In the first Powerplay, no more than two fielders can be positioned outside 30 yard circle (this is increased to three for the second and third Powerplay blocks). In the first 10 overs, it is also required that at least two fielders are in close catching positions. The ICC have announced, as of 1 October 2007, with regard to Powerplays, that the captain of the fielding side may elect to position 3 fielders outside the 30 yard circle in one of the two 5-over Powerplays. The rule was first invoked in a match between Sri Lanka and England at Dambulla Stadium on 1 October 2007. Sri Lanka won the match by 119 runs. Currently both 2nd and 3rd powerplay will have 3 fielders outside 30 yard circle, and one powerplay is chosen by batting team.
-----------------------
Trial regulations
--------------------
The trial regulations also introduced a substitution rule that allowed the introduction of a replacement player at any stage in the match. Teams nominated their replacement player, called a Supersub, before the toss. The Supersub could bat, bowl, field or keep wicket; the replaced player took no further part in the game. Over the six months it was in operation, it became very clear that the Supersub was of far more benefit to the side that won the toss, unbalancing the game. Several international captains reached "gentleman's agreements" to discontinue this rule late in 2005. They continued to name supersubs, as required, but simply did not field them. On 15 February 2006, the ICC announced their intention to discontinue the Supersub rule on 21 March 2006.
------------------------------------------
Teams with ODI status
---------------------------------------------------
The International Cricket Council (ICC) determines which teams have ODI status (meaning that any match played between two such teams under standard one-day rules is classified as an ODI).
The ten Test-playing nations (which are also the ten full members of the ICC) have permanent ODI status. The nations are listed below with the date of each nation's ODI debut shown in brackets:
  • PAKISTAN (11 February 1973)
  • AUSTRALIA (5 January 1971)
  • NEWZEALAND (11 February 1973)
  • INDIA (13 July 1974)
  • WEST-INDIES (5 September 1973)
  • ENGLAND (5 January 1971)
  • SRILANKA (7 June 1975)
  • BANGLADESH (31 March 1986)
  • ZIMBABWE  (9 June 1983)
  • SOUTH-AFRICA (10 November 1991)

  •  Kenya (from 18 February 1996, until the 2013 ICC World Cup Qualifier)
  •  Canada (from 1 January 2006 until the 2013 ICC World Cup Qualifier)
  •  Ireland (from 1 January 2006 until the 2013 ICC World Cup Qualifier)
  •  Netherlands (from 1 January 2006 until the 2013 ICC World Cup Qualifier)
  •  Scotland (from 1 January 2006 until the 2013 ICC World Cup Qualifier)
  •  Afghanistan (from 19 April 2009 until the 2013 ICC World Cup Qualifier)
Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands and Scotland earned this status as a result of their performance at the 2005 ICC Trophy. The ICC followed this precedent in 2009 and used the results of the 2009 ICC World Cup Qualifier (the new name of the ICC Trophy) to award ODI status for the following four years. During the tournament Afghanistan capped a remarkable year by finishing 5th and qualifying for ODI status.
At one point, the ICC occasionally granted associate members permanent ODI status without granting them full membership and Test status. This was originally introduced to allow the best associate members to gain regular experience in internationals before making the step up to full membership. First Bangladesh and then Kenya received this status. Bangladesh have since made the step up to Test status and full membership; but as a result of Kenya's poor performance the ICC have since decided to end their permanent ODI status.
In addition, the ICC reserves the right to grant special ODI status to all matches within certain high profile tournaments, with the result being that the following countries have also participated in full ODIs:
  •  East Africa (from 7 June 1975 until 14 June 1975)
  •  United Arab Emirates (from 13 April 1994 until 17 April 1994; from 16 February 1996 until 1 March 1996; from 16 July 2004 until 17 July 2004 and from 24 June 2008 until 26 June 2008)
  •  Namibia (from 10 February 2003 until 3 March 2003)
  •  Hong Kong (from 16 July 2004 until 18 July 2004 and from 24 June 2008 until 25 June 2008)
  •  United States (from 10 September 2004 until 13 September 2004)
  •  Bermuda (from 1 January 2006 until 8 April 2009)
In 2005 the ICC controversially gave ODI status, for the first time, to several matches involving teams composed of players from more than one country. These were the Asia XI vs ICC World XI game played in January 2005 as part of the World Cricket Tsunami Appeal in aid of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami relief effort and three commercially sponsored "Australia vs ICC World XI" ICC Super Series games which took place in Melbourne in October 2005. The latter matches were poorly attended, heavily one-sided and generated little interest in the cricketing world. It was an experiment which many feel should not be repeated and many cricket statisticians (e.g. Bill Frindall) agree that the matches should not be incorporated into the official ODI records

ICC World Twenty20

The ICC World Twenty20 or ICC World T20 also referred to as the T20 World Cup is the international championship of Twenty20 cricket. The event is organised by the sport's governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC). The tournament consists of 16 teams in which all the ten ICC Full Members are automatically qualified and the remaining six spots will be contested through ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier. The event is held every two years. The inaugural event, the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, was staged in South Africa from 11–24 September 2007. The tournament was won by India, who became the first World T20 Champions after defeating Pakistan by 5 runs in the final at Johannesburg. The second event, the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 took place in England from 5-21 June 2009.This tournament was won by the previous runners-up Pakistan who defeated Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in the final at Lord's, London.[1] The third Twenty20 World Tournament was held from 30 April 16 May 2010 and hosted by the West Indies. The winners were England who defeated Australia by 7 wickets in the final at Kensington Oval, Barbados. This was the first ever ICC tournament won by England.

Rules and regulations

During the group stage and Super Eight, points are awarded to the teams as follows:
-------------------------------------------
Results Points
Win 2 points
No result 1 point
Loss 0 points
-----------------------------------
In case of a Tie (i.e. both teams score exactly the same number of runs at the end of their respective innings), a Super Over would decide the winner. In case of a Tie again in the Super Over, the match is won by the team that has scored the most 6s in their innings. This is applicable in all stages of the tournament. But this provision came in existence from 2009. During the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 tournament, the provision for deciding the winner in case of a Tie was a Bowl-out.[2]Within each group (both group stage & Super Eight stage), teams are ranked against each other based on the following criteria:[3]
  1. Higher number of points
  2. If equal, higher number of wins
  3. If still equal, higher net run rate
  4. If still equal, lower bowling strike rate
  5. If still equal, result of head to head meeting.

Qualification

Hosts

The International Cricket Council's executive committee voted for the hosts of the tournament after examining bids from the nations which expressed an interest in holding a Twenty20 World Championship. After South Africa in 2007, England and West Indies hosted the tournament in 2009 and 2010 respectively. The next tournament will be hosted by Sri Lanka in 2012. The ICC decided that South Africa and England should host the first two tournaments as they were the earliest adopters of the format. Bangladesh will host the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 Championship.

Summary

Performance of teams
The table below provides an overview of the performances of teams in the ICC World Twenty20. It contains data from all three tournaments

Mendis makes T20 history as Sri Lanka win series 2-0

PALLEKELE, Sri Lanka: Ajantha Mendis became the first bowler to bag six wickets in a Twenty20 international as Sri Lanka clinched the series 2-0 against Australia with an eight-run win in the second match Monday. The unorthodox spinner finished with 6-16 off four overs as Australia lost their way after an explosive start provided by Shane Watson, who hammered a 24-ball 57 with five sixes and six fours.Australia, who lost the first match by 35 runs, were eventually restricted to 149-9, after the hosts made 157 at the Pallekele International Stadium.Sri Lanka were indebted to opener Mahela Jayawardene (86 off 63 balls) for posting a competitive total before Mendis ended Australia's early flourish.Angelo Mathews also caught the eye for Sri Lanka with his key role in David Warner's dismissal off Mendis as he held a superb catch in the deep, but was about to step over the boundary line before relaying the ball to Jayawardene.Watson dominated a 71-run stand for the opening wicket with Warner, but his dismissal in the sixth over triggered a collapse which saw Australia lose four wickets in the space of four runs.Sri Lanka were earlier strongly placed at 121-3 after 14 overs before paceman John Hastings rallied his team to eventually finish with 3-14 off four tight overs.Fast bowler Brett Lee was the other main wicket-taker with 3-39, including two wickets in the last over.Jayawardene dominated Australia's attack with exciting strokeplay, smashing one six and 12 fours in his sixth half-century in Twenty20 internationals. He survived on 82 when he was caught off a Lee full-toss in the last over, but it was ruled a no-ball as it was above the waist. He fell in the same over, caught in the deep going for a big shot.Sri Lanka, electing to bat after winning the toss, lost skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan in the third over before being steadied by Jayawardene.Dilshan, who hit an unbeaten century in the opening match, contributed just four runs this time before being trapped leg-before by Lee.Jayawardene then added 43 for the second wicket with Dinesh Chandimal (13) and 46 for the fourth with Kumar Sangakkara, who made a 16-ball 24
