England to start from 84-0 on Day One

BIRMINGHAM: India experienced yet another day of despondency on Day One of the third Test against England at Edgbaston Wednesday. Put into bat by Andrew Strauss, India were bowled out for 224 with none of the top six batsmen scoring fifties. It required a plucky 84-run stand between skipper Dhoni and Praveen Kumar for the tattered scorecard to be held together. In response, England ended the day with 84 for no loss. Alastair Cook, whose highest score in the last two Tests was 12, finished the day with an unbeaten 27 while Strauss reached his first half century of the series.India's batting machinery refused to roll again. It has its share of old parts, but they were fine before this series.

Following the qualification of his team Ireland captain George Dockrell, who is also a regular member of Ireland's senior team, was delighted with his team's overall result."It is a huge moment for me to be leading a side into the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup," said the Dubliner."To have played a part in leading the side into qualification for the event next year means a lot to me. I am lucky to have been part of the senior ICC Cricket World Cup earlier this year in India. The experience of playing at that highest level made a huge difference to my career. I came back to join the under-19s and felt really at home as we planned our pathway to Australia."The guys keep asking me from time to time about my World Cup experience and I share it with them. Now these guys will get a chance to experience what I went through. We will start planning for the event shortly. I have attended a camp in Sydney, but apart from that I have not really had an experience of playing in Australia. I am sure the pitches there will offer a new challenge for the squad. We are all ready for it," he said.PNG coach and former Australia fast bowler Andy Bichel, who is originally from Queensland, will know the conditions well.He said: "This is probably one of the most important tournaments for us. In terms of men's cricket, it shows the amount of development work that has gone into the sport in PNG. The more these guys get exposed to better opposition, the better they will become."I know the conditions in Queensland, especially at the time of the year when we will have the World Cup (August). Brisbane is a lot closer to home for the guys. They have experience of playing there. We play quite often in Brisbane and have camps there. It will be much easier to acclimatise there."ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said: "The ICC U19 Cricket World Cup is a very important tournament for us and I want to congratulate those six teams who have qualified to take part in Queensland next year."This tournament has proved to be an important stepping stone for elite young cricketers aspiring to play international cricket. It's an opportunity for them to develop and test their skills in a high-pressure situation against the world's best at this level."We also use it as an opportunity to educate them on several important issues like anti-corruption, anti-doping and social responsibility expected of international cricketers while also exposing them to the ICC Code of Conduct and media attention."In the past, we have seen some quality players come through the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, including star players like Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yuvraj Singh, Brian Lara, Ian Bell, Virat Kohli, Eoin Morgan, Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla. I expect next year's event to be no different in producing future world stars.

Fiji to Hold Singapore Camp

The Fiji Blues men's team will give themselves the best chance for success at World Cricket League Division 6 in September after confirming a one-week camp in Singapore before the tournament.
The 14-man squad, which will be named next week, will get the use of Singapore's state of the art facilities for the camp which includes both turf and synthetic wickets, international-standard grounds and an indoor training venue. They will also play two warm-up matches against the Singapore A team. The team will depart Fiji on September 8 with the camp to run that week before they head to Malaysia for the start of the tournament on the 15th.The camp came about after Singapore officials extended an invitation to Fiji to use their facilities before the tournament and give them a chance to acclimatise to the heavily humid Asian conditions, along with invaluable practice on turf wickets which will be used in Malaysia. Cricket Fiji chief executive Jon Symonds said the decision to hold the camp highlighted the commitment of Cricket Fiji to the team's preparation for the WCL tournament.World Cricket League is absolutely vital to the future of cricket in Fiji and this investment demonstrates the absolute commitment of board and management to giving the squad every opportunity to prepare in surroundings and facilities akin to the match conditions they will experience in Malaysia," Symonds said. "Singapore provides us with training facilities we can only dream about in Fiji and having received the invitation from Singapore Cricket there was no way we could decline the invitation.""This is yet another very important step in developing cricket in Fiji, in that the performance of the men's national team is vital to the overall strategic plan of Cricket Fiji."This is costing a huge amount of money and Cricket Fiji could really do with some corporate support and I continue to engage with corporates around Fiji hoping for some financial assistance."The camp will run from September 8-15 with the tournament to begin on September 17

India greats in cash-for-comment row

NEW DELHI :Former India captains Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri have been accused of a conflict of interest amid claims payments from the Indian cricket board would sway their television commentary. The weekly news magazine Outlook devoted the front-page of its latest edition to the duo, who reportedly receive 36 million rupees (800,000 dollars) a year from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).Gavaskar, 62, and Shastri, 49, both highly respected voices in Indian cricket, are paid by the BCCI to commentate on almost every series India plays at home or abroad.Shastri also serves on the International Cricket Council's cricket committee, of which Gavaskar is a past member.Cricket pundits say Gavaskar and Shastri are unlikely to criticise or speak against the policies of the BCCI."Every commentary box in the world has its share of supremacists and propagandists, England and Australia no exception," cricket analyst Rahul Bhattacharya told the magazine. But it's extraordinary that the Indian board has made it institutional.Gavaskar, in England to commentate on the ongoing India series, insisted his contract did not stop him from airing his views."I would advise to all who are saying that there is a conflict of interest to actually see my work, listen to what I say, and then judge me," Gavaskar told Outlook in reply to the accusations."In my columns, I speak strongly against BCCI policies. I?m not beholden to the BCCI. My contract has nothing to do with the views I express as a columnist and commentator. The BCCI said the charges of conflict of interest were "trivial and frivolous""The board pays them for their professional qualities," BCCI vice-president and official spokesman Rajiv Shukla said."They are outstanding commentators and respected at the international level. What they have achieved is because of their personal talent."These are trivial and frivolous allegations. It is not fair to suggest that there is a conflict of interest because BCCI never dictates on what they should say.

PCB slammed for playing with Pak cricketers' careers

Islamabad, Aug 9: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), under its ‘misfit’ 78 year-old chairman Ijaz Butt, has been slammed for playing with the careers of the national cricketers by omitting three key players from a 28-member list of central contract.

Senior batsman Mohammad Yousuf, who was earlier dropped from the 2011 World Cup squad for poor form, also lost out on a central contract this year. The contracts were awarded based on seniority, discipline and performance.Malik, 28, Kamran, 29 and Kaneria, 30 were not considered for central contracts because they have not been cleared of match fixing,” Alam said, adding: “As long as Malik and Kaneria are not cleared by the PCB integrity committee, a meeting of which is scheduled for August 15, they will not be considered for the contracts.”He also said that Kamran, who was in A category in the last contract, was dropped because his performance was not satisfactory.Meanwhile, Kamran, who had played 53 Tests, 137 one-day internationals and 38 Twenty20s, said that he was disappointed with the decision.“I am disappointed, but I just need to keep on playing domestic cricket and prove my form to the selectors and board,” he added.PCB contracted players include:Category A: Younus Khan, Misbahul Haq, Umar Gul, Mohammad Hafeez, Saeed Ajmal and Abdul RehmanCategory B: Abdul Razzaq, Imran Farhat, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Akmal, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Wahab Riaz and Taufiq UmarCategory C: Junaid Khan, Tanvir Ahmad, Hammad Azam, Safraz Ahmad, Sohail Khan, Adnan Akmal, Yasir Shah, Ramiz Raja and Sharjeel KhanStipends: Mohammad Talha, Aizaz Cheema, Zulfiqar Babar, Raza Hasan and Mohammad Ayub Dogar.
